Chassis Kit

I was thinking about some sort of Chassis Kit.
Large for 4 heatsinks.
Small for 2 heatsinks

Top plate .090
Back Plate .090
Base Plate .188 (plenty thick enough, mine is only .185)
Front Plate .375 (9.5m) essentially 14x8
Top & Bottom rail for mounting bottom plate and tieing Heatsinks together.
Angle Brackets for mounting front Plate.
$68 CAD plus shipping

So far this is not a big issue I have a supplier who will cut everything to size for large orders. Finishing surfaces and egdes then Drilling through holes is up in the air at the moment. This is just a tickler to see how much real interest there is, could cost $100 I don't know.

Options

If we swap out the back Panel for a CNC panel from FPE.
$110 CAD Plus Shipping(Post #57)
Anodizing $20
Thicker Top Plate (.125) $6
Drilling Screw holes for assembly

Status Update

February 18th 2009

Well I have been working wth R-Theta on ways to reduce costs a little and reduce setup costs for machining to see if I can make it more economical.

I was thinking if I can make all four sections the same (think IKEA Furniture) then I could do with only one setup. By replacing the bottom flange with mounting holes for a bar (1/2 square stock) and mirroring all other machining I can get make one profile fit all four locations.

We would still retain the flange on top & back for a slick recessed lid and back panel. We would retain the mounting holes for brackets for the front plate, though now they will appear front and back on all sections. There would be a slot down the center when two pieces bolted together, not visible from the outside and not effecting the function of the heatsink. Dead center between two panels is less than ideal for mounting a device anyway.

I would eliminate flycutting to length as any length discrepancies would be hidden under the chassis as the Bar stock would form the mount for the bottom plate and it is measured from the machined top surface down. Any length variance of +/- .010 would be below the bar.

It may then be possible to hit 100 units as even two sections would retain the benefit of the machining to make a clean much smaller cabinet.

The cost per section all machined up real purdy... about $40 CAD

The only thing left to do is drill and tap yourself to mount your devices. Well that and make the panels, but those are all flat sheets and very easy to work with in most cases.

As a reminder if there is enough interest in 25 home grown chassis kits, which equals 100 heatsinks at 4 per chassis, the pricing would work out pretty close to the following.

Most basic version, members do all the drilling and such.
Includes Anodizing, all blank panels including 9M front plate & 4 unmachined Heatsinks.
158USD

Upscale version, members do some drilling as part of final assembly
Includes all the above except swap out blank back panel for finished panel from FPE and Pre machined Heatsinks. May be able to include drilling screw holes in panels for mounting as well.
250USD

Requested Quotes for 10" length and pricing for Drilling and Tapping only. If we eliminate the CNC machining of the recess lip on the heatsink and use the support bars to mount the panels we could save money. I would give R-Theta drawings that allow the mounting holes to be drilled to allow the top and rear panels to still appear flush to the surface after they bolt to the mounting rails.

R-Theta can not supply the 65605 profile from stock. If we want to stay with the 65605(9002) profile we need to buy thier minimum manufacture lot which is 3000 pounds or 330Ft. I do have special pricing for that amount, but I doubt we could hit.

8" Black no holes 468 units @ $24 ea.
8" Black with holes 468 units @ $31 ea.
10" Black no holes 400 units @ $30 ea.
10" Black with holes 400 Units @ $37 ea.

After reviewing many different options I have switched to this profile from R-Theta 66449(9013) The pricing for this profile is below. The profile is very similiar in size, shape and wieght. It is fractionally smaller hence the derating discussions on the thread. The 65605 could probably have dissapated 50 watts max, the 66449 could probably do 40 watts according to the thermal plots I ran with the R-Theta thermal tools. Now remember that is each, a large chassis has 4 heatsinks so multiple 40W x 4 =160W. A small Chassis has 2 heatsinks so multiply 40W x 2 = 80W.

March 17th 2009

Added column for interest in a 5" high profile for members who want to use this as a small chasis solution and still use 4 heatsinks. Use small chassis pricing for the cabinet kit to go with 4 of the 5" profiles.

March 20th 2009

New Data posted on the thread to support using 4 x 6" for an F5 Stereo configuration. Using 4 x 5" would only be possible if you sign a waiver to state that you do not have toddlers or pets in the house!

The FPE Rear Panel will only be vaild for the 10" Profile. All other options remain valid.

I would like members to start changing your votes to actual numbers please.

Pricing Review - Following along with the current pricing laid out in the wiki if we meet the Min. MOQs invovled.

1) This configuration will also serve as a basic F5 Chassis with the right Hexfet and Insulator choice.
The most basic Chassis which is 4 Heat Sinks, 4 Blank Raw Panels, and mounting rails would be $187 CAD. To get the $187 CAD basic kit you need only select 4 of the 5"/6" heatsinks and 1 Chassis (2 x 10" or 4 x 5"/6").

2) The more substancial version of a basic kit would be $221 CAD, for this you get 10" Heatsinks and the large Chassis kit. To get the $221 CAD kit you need only select 4 of the basic 10" heatsinks and 1 Chassis (4 x 10").

3) If you want the Heatsinks already machined for assembly, then you would pick 4 of the 10" Drilled & Tapped and 1 of the Chassis (4 x 10"). This kit would be $253 CAD.

Each option you add after that adds to the cost.

All pricing is subject to 3% Pay Pal, applicable taxes and shipping costs

I have added a preliminary accounting sheet for financial transactions, this is not active as yet and will become active when I close the Initial Interest portion of this GB April 19th 2009

As there is a large US contingent in the GB, I am looking for a Member to act as a central delivery hub close to Southern Ontario, Canada. This member would need adequate space to recieve a skid of Heatsinks and have his own transportation with easy access to postal facilities. As was the case in the last GB all the boxes are prepackaged and labeled and only need to be mailed. I will transfer the funds to the US member to pay for USPS fees, as I will be the central point for collecting funds. The advantage to US members is the tax savings, (13%) as R-Theta will have a consolidated US shipment. I beleive the shipping will be cheaper from within the continental US and all customs and brokerage fees are included in one consolidated shipment and shared equally amoungst all US members.

The designated US Member must be of good standing and have the support of the group as there is an enormous amount of trust and responsibility required of this individual

April 22nd 2009

Here are some GB updates I need to care of before I can finalize billing.

1) As we are no where near 20 kits, I am dropping the optional rear panel kit ($65) from the Group Buy.

2) We are at 15 of the Rear panels finished by Rear panel express and it looks like that is it. I will have to get a new price based on 15 as the quoted price was assuming we hit 20. If the interest drops off on this option we I will have to drop it as well. If we drop the professionaly finished panel the blank panel will be included in the kit.

3) As we only have 12 of the 6" drilled and tapped profile, 4 of which are mine, I am forced to drop this option as well.

4) There are two members I would ask if you can take the 10" profile inplace of the 6".

5) Sandbasser & Jazzbass can you please review your selections and make the appropriate decsions?

I want to get these issues resolved this week, so I can press on.

Initial Interest Survey (Closed)

I am going to base all the prices on MOQ 100 and change as the interest requires. (Increased from 25 to 100)
The heatsink portion of the GB would be open to anyone wishing just to purchase heatsinks as well.
If we get the chassis Anodized Black and the heatsinks Anodize Black it is going to look very dark. The option would be to leave the front plate out of the Anodizing batch and members can finish to thier own preference, or get the heatsinks Clear Anodized.
Large Chassis requires 4 heatsinks
Small Chassis requires 2 heatsinks
