Hi, I've this old mp3 player. I was trying to turn it on and nothing happened, so I opened it and found this component broken. I don't know what to look for to find a spare part. Any idea?
thanks!

thanks!
Hello.
Yes it's coil, but only plastic cover is brocken, not ferrite coil itself.
You have to follow track from DC plug until any regulator, check diodes and resistors.

It is part of the power supply. Looking at the colours, it looks like a 47uH choke for voltage converting.
(very strange, i answered via Tapatalk two times and it says Succes but there's not my messages 😕 )

The real question is this: is the part bad? Your plastic housing is broken, but it is just a coil of wire around a form. If that is intact and still soldered, then it is OK.
I'm fairly confident its not a plastic housing, rather the ferrite shroud has fallen off. L3 is a shielded inductor and the outer ferrite material forms the shielding. L3 needs replacing.
ferrite is hard and brittle.
Try to scratch the broken part.
If it's plastic you should be able to leave a mark.
If it's ferrite it probably won't scratch. But you might be able to break off an edge/corner.

First you need to determine, if it´s 47uH or 47mH.
Then just Google search 47xxH inductor coil SMD. Mouser has a lot for a couple of Euros/piece.
What brand is the MP3 player?? Since the coil is "L3" maybe there´s a way to find the exact spec´s.

Neither did I 🙂
Try contacting Creative on some technical advise site, and ask for the value of L3 on the Creative Nomad C.
Couldn´t hurt.

As noted (L3), it's just a coil, not a transformer.
A transformer could have "E" ferrite , a coil not .
It's just a "I" ferrite ,no matter if the "cover" is also ferrite , this coil must work.
The problem is not the coil.

Ok, where should I start from? I'm really confused. I'm not good and for me this pcb is really a mess.

Even if voltage arrives at regulators and they working , i think there's IC controller for ON/OFF.
Without schematic and skills it will be very difficult and maybe impossible to repair it.
