Acoustic Research AR 9 rebuild

Starting a rebuild of a set of Acoustic Research AR 9s.

Structurally the towers are in good condition, but all speakers inside need refurbishing/replace.

I do not know where to start. Is it even worth it? My wife thinks it is not. The project guy in me thinks it will be fun and a good learning experience.

Where should I start?

I will need 4 woofers I know that for sure. I don't know what kind to buy. I would like as close to factory or better.

I think the tweeters are good. I really cannot tell. (How do you tell if you need new tweeters)

All of the mids need replacing (I think there are two different kinds of mids on each tower), I do not know where to start.

Any guidance on the subject will be a great help.

Go to the above site which is the AR classic speaker rebuild page and look for what you want or follow the links as it relates to your AR9.

As far as replacement speakers look up Acoustic Research Parts From the same Manufacturer AR has been using since 1983! for the speaker types you might want or use as replacements. These are about as close to original as you can find.

Suggest you download this document so you can understand what you are up against in doing the update for the AR9. The document is specifically for the AR3a and some of the info may apply to your needs.

I have got my replacements for my AR3a from AB-Tech and have had no issues.

A very worthwhile winter project.
