I'm trying to find an acrylic platter of about 1,5-2" thick for no more than 100GBP. There is one HK supplier on Ebay, who has one for that price.
It's acceptable, except that it is completely clear and I prefer a satin/matt/frost effect (i.e. not polished).
Can't find anything. Not from Teres, Not from Clearaudio, ISOkinetic, etc etc. I can find their turntables, but not loose platters, ANYwhere, and certainly not with prices.
However, i don't mind going for cheaper 3rd party brands that I may not be aware of.
Any advice is helpful

Look at Project turntables they have a upgrade platter which I bought for $100.00 (CDN dollars) not sure if this will work for you but have a look. BM.I'm trying to find an acrylic platter of about 1,5-2" thick for no more than 100GBP. There is one HK supplier on Ebay, who has one for that price.

Thanks, I did have a look at that one, but it is thinner than an inch I believe. And there are many available in that niche of the market.
I wouldn't mind a replacement platter for any brand, or upgrade platter for that matter, but it does need to be at least about 38mm thick.

Hi,
Why don't you make yourself one ? It is much cheaper than getting one from a vendor.
Best regards,
Bins.

Because I expect to need a lather for that and those are a bit more expensive than buying one.
Unless there is a way to make one without a large.
If u know how, please let me know.

Is there someone near you who might be able to sand blast it for you? There are many grades of material that can be used for different effects.

Schue ( in Germany) used to do a range of platters when they were primarily selling kits. They might still be available.
The DIY hifi supply one was teh one I referred to in my original post. It's not frost looking, which I prefer, but it is a contender nevertheless (ca 100GBP incl P&P via air).
I've asked Scheu if they sell any, as I couldn't find any on their website.
Oh, as for what deck it is, it will be for a ksporry original (read😀IY)
Just to let you know what it will be like (Don't have any drawings at home, but havce some in the office).
Basically it will combine elements of teh Project Genie and the Project RPM 9 (I think it's the 9). What I plan to do is make 2 platforms made of 38mm oak (why oak? Leftovers from kitchen work top...), with the oak sandwiched between 5mm aluminium plates. Each oak layer will have holes in them for lead shot to increase it's mass (even though oak is already heavy on it's own).
In total there will be two parts/shelves: 1 where the motor will be housed on its arm (similar to the genie), and on top of that will be stacked the second body that will support the platter and hold on its extension the tone arm (similar to the RPM9). In between there will be spacers.
I need to work out what type of spacers I will take. I was thinking of a space of ca 1" between the two platforms, made of aluminium pipe. But I would think it's best to at least get some suspension between the two platforms. Alternatively I could use isolation spikes/feet between the two bodies.
And ofcourse there will be isolation feet below teh body containing the motor (bottom body).
I was also thinking of some light effect by sandwiching an acrylic layer between the aluminium layer and the oak layer of the motor body/shelf, which lights up when I turn it on.
The main body is not too difficult to sort out, but finding an affordable platter of ca 2" acryl is...
Out of curiosity, has anyone ever used a router to route a platter out of an acrylic block? I guess that would always be a possibility

Hi ksporry,
Depending on where you are in the UK there is an alternative. I too was looking for a platter of 300mm dia by approx 50mm for my Vinyl Temple turntable (see thread on forum). I spent several weeks trawling the net to find a platter and found that for what I wanted it was going to cost me between £300 - £500.
Finally I found a company in Newcastle who sell nylon, acrylic rod up to 300mm dia with the minimum length of 50mm (URL of company site below)
http://www.plasticstockist.com/index.cfm?Page=cXVpY2tmaW5k&Keyword=pvc rod&Code=MzAwUFZDUkc=
Select custom from the menu and enter 50mm and you will find it costs
£72.30(inc.VAT). It takes a few days on delivery (well wrapped and sent by courier).
The rod is a satin dark grey colour and is failry smooth. I then took it to a local small engineer who fashioned it to my requirments (cost £25). He hooked it up to a cnc lathe, smoothed and rounded it, and cut a precision hole for my spindle which I left with him. I now have a huge thick custom platter for around £100.
I hope this helps

P.S. if the url link doesn't work just go to
PlasticStockist.com, Plastic Sheets, Rods, Perspex Acrylic Sheets, Engineering Plastics
and type 300mm rod in the search box 🙂

Question
Hi,
Thanks for the information, it helps me as well.
First, which material have you used? there is a PVC or Nylon.
Second, how does it sound compare to acrylic platter?
Thanks,
Yaki

Hi, I am new here but i have been building TT's for donkeys years. Have you looked into buying a VPI platter and bearing as a unit ? They are attractively priced, especially so on the second hand market.
Once i am out of Moderation i will post some of my designs and pictures.
Ciao,
Lara.

Routing 2” acrylic is very difficult, the results will be miserable. Platter driven directly by belt has to be perfectly round otherwise the speed will flutter (go up and dawn every turn). Also you need to fit the bearing perfectly as it is crucial for sound waves transfer out of platter – even professionals have problems with that. Buying ready platter for bearing not fitted to it is not a good idea.
I second the advice of buying material and turning the platter on high quality lathe at local shop; just remember the surface has to be concave (if used with center clamp). I also like the idea of second hand VPI platter and bearing but one close to 2” (from Scout Master) will be hard to find and price will be higher than your budget - I got one as a gift, I like it, it has the outer ring clamp.

Another idea I am going to check soon is simply use... records for platter: I am about to use about 20 LP's by gluing them together while centered with a 6mm rode. Later, I will smooth the side of the platter by using a thick glue. Do you think it might work?

Hi,
The turntable I am designing is having a layered platter - main platter made of acrylic sheet and sub platter made out of wood.
Best regards,
Bins.
