Hello I picked up some beautifully made cabs yesterday and they were made for a fostex fe108sigma. I couldn’t pass them by for the quality build and price. At the time the driver requirements was unknown.
I have attached pics of the cabs.
does anyone know of a budget driver I can put in these that would sound good? At hand I have fe103 sol & ff105wk’s. I just missed the opportunity to get some early 103/4’s.
can anyone recommend a driver I. Can try in these horns even mark audio or TB that may sound great. I’d like some 4” mark audio as a bit of difference but using the forementioned fostex would keep the project prece Down.
I’ve attached pics of the cab. It’s well known . If nothing else will work I will try and get some fe108 sigmas but they are in a high price bracket & in Australia a pain to buy! Fostex and mark audio have distributers that are much more attractive due to shining. Happy with second hand too.
all advice great fully received- thank you

Based solely on published specs, the 105WK is a near enough drop-in with maybe a bit less* 'robust' (mid) bass due to lower* Qts. Regardless, suggest trying one before 'we' spend anymore time on it. 😉
FYI/FWIW/YMMV: Not keen on filled knotted plywood, so if any hint of cab related noise, recommend mass loading them with heavy weight perched on top (typically requires ~cab weight).
* Oops! Edit per p10: May need a bit of series resistance to 'fill up' the cab a bit.

Thanks both. I got the cabs for less than a sheet of plywood & it turns out they were very professionally built & finished I just couldn’t pass them buy. Someone put a lot of effort & money into building them, they were not your average build.
The ply that I was told was Tasmanian oak doesn’t have any notches. I was very impressed with the quality of materials & perfect finish - mitre joints rather than square joints so I they are way better than what I can build. 2 months in and I’ve still not finished the cabs for my fostex mg-130hr’s almost finished & I have had a new born!!
I’m gonna drop inthe ff 125 wk’s and see what happens, I have them in the cupboard gathering dust.
I was hoping someone was going to recommend a mark audio driver as I’m dying to buy some.
for less than $100 I might have a nice set of secondary speakers.
many more suggestions hapily taken
Dave can I expect anything viable from the 125wks? It would be a budget set up. From memory I was never happy with the. 125’s

FF125wk is an outlier in this series with the most serious ringing. 100Hz up the FF105wk sounds better, the bass extention is largely etermined by the horn.
I would stick with FF105.
But both drivers can be improved with a few mods.
The horn is not the greatest but it is not bad. Note that a commercail builder tried to sell inferior versions of this horn for something like $5k.

Yes, quite nice overall and for sure one of the best deals ever short of free, but what is the small light tan pieces visible on edge then, if not filler putty?
125WK ?! Typo in your OP?
125WK is technically too big, ergo more 'robust', etc., in theory.

Hi Dave can you give me some tips on diy mods before I put them in the cabs please. It looks like the 105’s are my best budget bet so squeezing everything out of them should BBEdit done today thank youFF125wk is an outlier in this series with the most serious ringing. 100Hz up the FF105wk sounds better, the bass extention is largely etermined by the horn.

Time for a nice solid wood supraBaffle?
I don’t know about its suitability but IIRC P7HD has a 100mm cutout.

would it be crazy to open up the hole 3mm and put in a Jordan JX92?

I like those drivers alot

Me too, but specs are so far off for this BLH that it would ideally need one near twice its size. 🙁
I’d love to use the intended driver, but I don’t want to splash out on them. I have the 105s in a cupboard gathering dustWhy not use the FE108∑ drivers!? That's what those horns are made for...

Dave do you reckon I just chuck the 105 in and hope for the best? I don’t have much to loose except extra holes in a very beautiful baffle. Let me know your thoughts and I will chuck them in today. I can then also play with other fostex 4” in thereIt will also be VERY difficult to find FE108∑, althou the recommended horn did not change when the FE108∑ became FE108e∑.

- Home
- Loudspeakers
- Full Range
- Alternative to Fostex FE108∑? Fostex it Mark Audio or TB anything considered
