Android phone direct to amp (no H/U)--sound quality questions

Hello.

My head unit was stolen and I don't want to install another one. I really only used it for it's aux source input anyway.

If I hook my Droid's headphone output directly to a JL 500/5 amp--will the source signal be strong enough to sound good?

If not--Is there any small preamp that I could use to bring up the source signal voltage to an acceptable level?

Thanks!

Oh, really? I had no idea that the micro USB had audio signal. Is it an analog signal or something that needs to be decoded and converted to analog? In other words... Could I just splice USB into the micro USB cable and be done with it or is it something more involved?

Thanks for the help.

Okay. Thanks!

Oh, Perry Babin... I recognize your name. Was in love with your site years ago. Paid for a copy of the site on disc and everything. Haven't been back there for years though due to life/time constraints. Will have to check it out again, soon.

1/8 to rca should work alright. I often use my old iPod for testing out amps on the bench, and it gets connected just like that. Some amps need reference to ground on the RCA shields, but most amps will work OK. I do not recommend grounding RCA shields in a car.

If you have any wierdness or noise just post up and we'll help ya.

I was just given an HTC Thunderbolt Android and use the headphone out into a receiver streaming Shoutcast. The audio is great.
As mentioned earlier though you may need a preamp. I don't think you will have enough gain to drive the amp to good level.

I use a Droid X as my main audio source these days. It'll drive the amp pretty decent just straight in from the 1/8 phono jack. Lately I have also been running an Audiocontrol elec crossover between the phone and amps Get an app called "poweramp" for android. It will support 24 bit flac and lossless and has a freaking GREAT graphic eq and gain control built into the app. Naysayers- dont knock it till you've tried it. Sounds plenty good enough for a noisy mobile environment. If I wanna do some serious listening, I dig out the cd's, swap my rca's around, and fire up the Alpine 7949.
