Any kit out there that can match or surpass the Acoustic Energy AE1

Neither of the reviews found by bing contain any numbers like frequency response, width of dispersion at what frequencies, % harmonic distortion, %IM. The hard stuff. One review did mention the inevitable lack of bass from a tiny box and tiny driver.
I turned down an AR bookshelf speaker in 1975 and haven't changed my mind. Home Entertainment store was demonstrating with Simon & Garfunkle, which contains no bass. Both were tenors. If your vocalist is Diane Krall who never lets her hands stray from the home position on her grand, Acoustic Energy is fine. If Rudolf Serkin goes for the low notes in Appassionatta sonata, this box will miss measures of music.
My music room speakers are 179 L. At that they are smaller than the Steinway grand they can emulate. You're old enough, buy a house. My house cost less than 1.5 Steinway grands (or maybe one these days) and has a 4.3 m w x 3.3 m h x 11 m l music room. I listen to these 300 w rms capable speakers at 1/8 to 50 watts. At that they are more efficient than me, who can exert maybe 40 watts pounding a Steinway console piano.

There is no need for earth shaking bass response, this is going to be on my tertiary system. As mentioned, vocals is the priority, I have a couple of subwoofers that I can add to the system if required

I do not get it, again, what's so special. Frequency response looks horrid.
