There are many, many internet radio apps on the net, but either defunct, or full of ads, or full of nasty gotchas. Does anyone know a decent, effective and wide ranging app which can easily be used with W7?

Most USA located FM stations stream directly from their website.
Probably true elsewhere as well.

Not an app but a directory...🙂 But if you search and select a station you have the option to play it outside of any app.
Community Radio Station Board
If you want an app their recommended apps for various O/S here..

Plenty of stations...look under "By popularity" or By Category" and drill down..and hit play..examples..

What kind of features are you looking for, most audio players can play http+audio streams, do you need directory service? VLC has one, though it's a little clunky.
I just want something that works well with W7, doesn't replace existing drivers with proprietary drivers and often ask for registration and payment, and with no ads.
Don't want much, do I?

TuneIn. About ads, if a channel on it has ads there will be ads. Plenty don't, and plenty do. Works in Logitech Media Server (free and runs on most any device) with no user configuration required.
FWIW I couldn´t install the more advanced ones shown above on my outdated LG phone but was successful with Online Radio Box.
Zero frills, very light, works anywhere.

after testing several apps previously, i have been using this apps on Android since last year
Simple Radio – Free Live AM FM Radio & Music App - Apps on Google Play
the advertisement is only on top of radio list but it does not pop up during streaming, only showing pop up menu when you change station.
convenient usage so far and only about $3 to remove ads but i have not buy it yet
anyway, once i had wanted to buy vintage FM tuner just to look classy on my audio rack, but then i realise my local station are not good. with internet radio i can stream from unlimited station anywhere on this earth
