ATC monitor clone

I'm thinking about building a pair of ATC SCM100 clones.
K100
I know ATC is good stuff but before I spend serious money I thought I'd see if anyone has any opions/advice? Are they as good as people say? Is I'm planning on building some kind of bi amp/ tri amp set up and this seems like a good place to start.

It's a good speaker. After saying this, what are you expecting?! Regarding no low frequency extension. Crossover frequency is high between woofer and ATC SM75-150 mid comparing it with a classic design, this is a dome mid after all. You will need clean 300/400W only for the ATC SB75-314 woofer/midwoofer (@max. excursion).

This is not the whole truth, I have built several pairs of my own design for various clients crossing the mid over at 800 hz and being 8 ohm custom for me, is very efficient and is easily driven by 78watts valve power to uncomfortable levels.

Build the Wilmslow version and enjoy

Thanks! I was a bit worried about how much power I would need for these.
I am planning on using a selection of chip amps for the moment anyway. Around 50w per side from a 3886 for the bass and a pair of 2020's for the mid and top.
Is there a good reason for tri-amping? I thought one amp should be ok for the mid and top, makes the xover easier too.

Personally I have not heard passive ATCs but for what it's worth I've heard from some who directly A/B'd passive and active ones the active ones are a good step ahead when it comes to precision and detail.

In the equivalent speaker ATC themselves use 200W for bass, 100W for mids and 50W for treble. ATC amps are rather special in that they run in Class A until they exceed 2/3 of rated output. The bass and mid amp are likely to be identical since the woofer is 8Ohm and the mid 16Ohm.
THey crossover at 380Hz and 3.5kHz using fourth order filters.

I have my mid's custom made for my company to 8 ohm spec. This is without doubt the best mid to price ratio in the world. I have used all the top name brands and this is by far the best. The crossover makes all the difference and remember the bass unit is very clean way past 800, so why cross it so low? Cross it higher and free up the mid!

Please remember, Its not the amount of watts, but rather the quality of the watts. Class A is always better than AB and valve amps are better still. You will find with A and Valve amps less watts are needed to get where you want.

I think you will be suprised how good the speaker will sound if done correctly. I have had my monitors up against the SCM100A and bettered them on various occasions. I used the Scan BE tweeter crossed at 3.5, mid at 800. They are just WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Several studio's here love them!

Thanks guys, I aspire to some serious valve amps some day but a bit at a time.
As always one answer leads to more questions.
What about crossovers? I was thinking of a simple passive xover before each amp. Any suggestions?
By the way, some reading suggested PHL do a better mid than the ATC. Thoughts?

Personally I am not a great fan of valve amps, they just never really done anything for me. But you picks your poison...

I am however a great fan of an abundance of quality watts. Headroom is a greatly undervalued feature in a stereo system.

As for alternative mids the obvious place to look would be the Volt VM752 dome.
