Hello guys,
I have a pair of B&W Matrix 3 over here.
One speaker doesn't do anything at all.
I checked this with different amplifiers and the problem is the speaker itself.
I already dismantled it but I don't see anything special at the crossover.
I'm wondering why I don't have anything.
I noticed the relay in the circuit, but it has only effect on the HF circuit, right?
Also the inductors seem fine, but hey, what can go wrong with an inductor...?
Seems like I need some advice here. What can be the cause?
Thank you in advance!

Have you swapped left and right speakers on the same amp, so its not the source?
Properly terminated speaker wire?
Broken traces on crossover?
Poor soldering joints?
Disassembled the other one to compare?

I work at a hifi shop and I tested them with another amplifier, source and speaker cables. The result is the same.Have you swapped left and right speakers on the same amp, so its not the source?

I checked the soldering and at first sight no broken traces.
It's very weird nothing comes out because the drivers are connected in parallel to the crossover.
This means that there should be a problem with the crossover, because this is the common part.
Any thoughts on the circuit that could cause this?
First see if the drivers are dead / blown, or alive.
Then check the wires.
Push connectors can get corroded, and so on.

Please check that the flexible wires of the voice coil that come out of the cone and go to the connector strip
are not touching each other.
are not touching each other.
I checked all the things above and these weren't the cause.
I bridged the relay contact and the sound came through!
So the real question is, why does the relay not engage?
The coil measures 330 Ohms and I did a diode test on the different diodes and transistors. They all seemed okay, but chances are biggest the transistors failed I think.

Late to this thread but would have suggested the relay since it does shut off all drivers. I haven't bypassed the relays on matrix 2s (only because I'm lazy) but many people do. IMO that makes more sense than trying to fix.
Relay contacts may be burnt.
As for bridging them, think why they put a relay in the first place.

In 40 years with my Matrix 2s I tripped the relay exactly once, on the first day, being stupid, long after the clipping lights lit up on the Adcom 555 driving them. Ever since the APOC has been unnecessary extra components in the audio path. OP's mileage may vary.
Check the relay as mentioned, the contacts has a limited estimated life span in nr of operations, over time the contact sets will develop arcing if they are turned on/off with load, which builds up and eventually you will have no contact, or they get a sufficient arc they will be welded together on one of the sides.
Measure on each side of the relay coil and check its ohm value, check it's voltage to activate when turned on as it should.
Next i woudl check the Diodes especially the zener diode, and after the transistor.
Apart from obvious solder breaks, broken wires etc these are the most likely culprits.
Solid state relays don't use physical contacts and have a much higher life expectancy if dimensioned properly with the right considerations. But they absolutely do not like coils/electromagnets. so care is needed in dimensionign and design process for them to actually last.

Change the relays with good branded ones, and with the highest current rating that will fit.
They are old, and will need replacement for normal wear in any case.
And turn volume low when switching on and off.
Back EMF from the coil causes arcing, and gradual reduction in contact quality.
You could put a MOV across contacts if needed.

have had that before would cut out on one spkr at low not high volume, turned speaker on its side, undid x over panel cover, pulled the blue relay cover off squeeze a bit at same time,
then looked over contacts, sprayed them with Ideal contact cleaner
worked for months.
finally put some liquid deoxit on them when had time.
