Hey all,
Long long time ago (20+ years ago).. used TermPro a couple times to design some car sub boxes. Worked great back then. I see that it is still somewhat updated.. looks like they even have a download install now, and updated drivers/etc. But the GUI looks dated for sure. Then there is BassBox 6 Pro. Which only comes on CD.. I can add an external one.. but that's crazy to me that in 2022, it's not updated to support download options.
Both have me a bit worried in terms of how good they are today to design speaker enclosures. While I mainly want to focus on subs.. I also want to build some LCR/rear speaker setups with smaller drivers. I still have my eyes on the DIYSound 1099 (or similar) for home theater of my own.
Can either of these software products be used to build smaller home theater cabinets.. using different drivers? Or are they pretty much only for sub boxes?
More so.. are they accurate.. in terms of sub driver T/S params, ports, etc?
I had one person recently tell me Bassbox Pro is awful for port design, and uses WinISD for that. I don't mind using that along side one of these products.. but ideally I want the sub of my design with wood cut sheet details, possibly cross over details (if that is an option), etc.
As this is purely a hobby.. the $250 for term pro is a bit hefty.. but I'd chalk it up IF it is viable today on a Windows 10/11 system, and provides accurate box design based on modern day drivers, and could possibly be used for home theater cabinets for speakers other than subs. The $150 for Bass Box Pro is a bit friendlier.. but being CD only.. I'd literally rather spend $100 more on Term Pro (which seems to have a recent update in 2022) and download/install than deal with last update in 2013 (though supposedly minor update in 2016). Seems like BassBox Pro is not actively developed. unless they are working on a 7.0 version with updated Windows 10/11 GUI support, etc. Granted.. a more modern GUI is not necessary.. but would be a bit more ideal.
I am not really looking to use sketchup or other tools to build my box cut sheet. I'd rather be able to choose a box design, set up the driver, any cross over (in the case of multiple drivers like mids/highs), etc.. and then have the cut sheet listed so I can more easily cut correctly and build. I believe TermPro and BassBox 6 Pro do that.
If either/both of these are too old/not very good.. and there is another better option that maybe has more box designs, DOES support smaller speaker designs for LCR/rears/etc, I'd be interested in knowing about that as well.
Thank you.

VituixCAD is the latest, greatest, free option for loudspeaker design. It won't generate a cutlist for you, but there's a nice tool in the auxiliary menu -> box volume to help you with the dimensions.
Hornresp, free, still releasing updates. It's one of the must used with features besides them scree are very simple.

I tried Hornresp. I must be a dummy because initially it doesn't look very intuitive. I am guessing I need a few tutorials/lessons on how to use it. I was imagining a modern day Graphical wonder that you select a driver, drag/drop some options maybe.. place ports where you want them, set the sizes, style, etc.. driver.. lay out the box (and possibly select from tons of designs others made/shared), and so on. Something fairly up to date and a bit easier to use than the software from 30 years ago. TermPro looks to be about the best from the videos I saw.. but some how, their videos look like they were recorded 25 years ago with a crappy mono mic. It's unreal how easy it is to record simple good quality videos today and yet we still see so many 2020/21/22 videos look awful.Hornresp, free, still releasing updates. The problem I have with TermPro.. is its price.. $250.. for one year of support/updates.. and yet its purely a sub box only software. Same with BassBox pro.. though it is worse due to CD only install and largely both have problems installing on Windows 7 and later for some reason. You would think the developers could at least compile the apps to work/install under Windows 10 or the last version of OSX or something. I guess there is just no money in the software few purchases here and there.. so they don't put anything past basic fixes in place.
It's not and the more recent multiple pipe offerings.......
, but way back when, AkAbak made HR seem like an Etch A Sketch in comparison, so stuck with it.
All that said, once you 'have a clue' you can bang out sims really quick or be pretty clueless and use the relatively new HELP/Input Wizard with a default design to mod till it looks like a winner, though don't forget to copy/paste your driver or redo the default's.

What about TermPro? That one looks to cover the majority of sub boxes built for the past 30 years or so. My concern is can it handle folded ports (made of wood the width of the box).. for 4th order or bass relfex boxes complete with cut sheets or not.
That is what I am thinking too.. I assumed their 3rd port option.. which looks like wood when it shows up.. is one where you can specify the port folded in on the sub as part of the wood structure and hopefully part of the cut sheet. If it can't do that.. then sadly it doesn't provide me much value. If it CAN do that.. then I could see some value in it because now you can just specify port width/length and it would be automated as part of the design/cut sheet. Guessing it isn't that good though.Never heard of it, but at a glance, no shelf vents, just round, flared, square/rectangular.
