best inexpensive fast bass 6.5” woofer

Hi Martin,
I've always liked the SEAS 6.5" mid-bass drivers. Found them to be excellent value for money, though I do not know how they compare to other similar sized drivers nowadays. Focal also make an excellent range.

When you say refurbishing, do you mean you are designing a new crossover with new drivers, using the old box? Or you intend to drop a new woofer into the existing speaker without redesigning the crossover or changing the tweeters?

Lot's to choose from in that size range. I think a little more info might be helpful. Like how big is the box, vented of sealed, crossover point to what tweeter? And that's probably just for starters.

It has a Seas 27TF tweeter with a Clarity Cap 6.8uf crossing at 2800hz with an 8 ohm woofer

Box is front vented 14” H 8.25” W 11” D

many thanks to all respondents 🙏👏🏼

Consider Wavecor drivers if they're available to you, the cheaper pressed frame ones, not the over-expensive cast frames. They have a high Qms, but low Qes, and sound quite remarkable.
The dimensions you gave - internal or external? We need internal dimensions to calculate the box volume, and the external dimension of the front the find the baffle step frequency. If you give the dia & length of the port, we can work out the tuning frequency.

External dimensions 👍🏻

Silver Flute, W17RC38-4 could be attributed with being fast and costs $32.67 at Meniscus. Measurements are lacking though.

John Krutke (Zaph) tested the -04 version HERE. The -04 will work in 15L with that vent which tunes it to 53 Hz. Probably not as nice as the 830875, but more budget friendly.

The OP hasn't stated the impedance of the original woofer which will make a big difference in selecting the replacement. The Silver Flute does come in both -4 and -8 versions.

Fitmartin, check the discussions about 'bass speed'.

"Bass speed" is easy to check!

Get a 60Hz test tone, play it through the woofer and with a microphone and measuring software you can check the speed. Yeah, if it measures only 55Hz that is a "slow" woofer and if it measures at 66Hz--that is a "fast" woofer.

I built a pair of line arrays with 12 sealed 5" woofers in each box--those things are really, really fast! They are so fast they are down -6dB at 72Hz so they are so tight and fast that bass does not exist at all.

Yes, I can never be accused as having "slow" bass, bloated bass or sloppy bass...just pure fast, tight bass is in the play book for the win! OK, I do have subwoofers with them because I want full bandwidth fidelity--just one of my quirks.

Sounds like the OP needs to go to data-bass.com and read up on "Bass Myths" to assist him in his quest. For the record, my dozens of 5" sealed woofers measure at 60Hz with the test tone so they are neutral I guess. 😉🙄 One of the first things a person should do when they attempt any DIY project, audio, automotive or whatever is to find out how it works correctly, understand and apply the engineering and use the proper accurate lingo to get the best results. Using terms like fast, slow, rhythm, pace, tight, loose, boomy, airy and language like that starts to sound like one of those audiophile rags fighting to get advertising dollars and free gear--don't fall into that trap. 🙂
