Bettering the Jean Hiraga 30W Amp

Hi !

I built the Jean Hiraga 30W Amp, and I absolutely love it's sound. Its my main amp as of now. But the DIY bug continues to prod me to strive for something even better. Hence this question.

in your opinion, which Amplifier, whether Class A/AB/D will you rate as giving a (distinctly audible) better quality sound than the JH? What did you find better. If you have done an A/B comparison that will be great.

Thanks. !!

depends, I prefer the Class D from TI but then LM3886 is good also, I use My Ref Rev A and I like the sound of it paired with the Raspberry Pi streamer. Though cant compare as such as they are all different.

Just like we can't compare Dosa with Utapa or Idli with Medu Wada even though both have a common batter ingredient 🙂

My previous Amps were TPA3116 followed by TI TPA3251 and a TI TPA3255 Eval Board, and SQ improved each time. On an A/B listening comparison, keeping the same song, music-source and same speakers, I found that the JH beats them all hands down in SQ.

you have better ears than me and not a very less noisy environment,
I have been wanting to try TPA3255 but haven't been able to get it and went directly to My Ref Rev A,

I have used TAS5765 on my Justboom amp hat - 30Watts @ 8ohms stereo 24volts Class D with inbuilt DAC 24bit / 192KHZ and I used it happily for 4 years and now I got a new DAC PCM5122 based which will be source for My Ref Rev A and the Circlophone with a PGA 2311 in between.

hi
Personally I also have a Hiraga 30W I use it with high efficiency speakers because the low power makes it necessary. For daily use I use a copy of the KRELL KSA250 amp I am currently making a KRELL KSA100MK2 with low noise fans because on this model the cooling is active using a large 120mm fan per amplifier module.

Back when the Hiraga amp was developed, there was the Kaneda Class-A 40W. I thought it sounded better than the Hiraga, noticeably in the bass. (And I built several Hiraga 20W and loved them)
I don't know if schematics were ever published, Mr. Hiraga said it was a complex build - not suitable for most DIY builders.

It would be nice to have a top ten list of DIY amps, although everybody will have their own preferences.
Recently I was following a few threads that were discussing OTL amps, not for everyone I know because of heat issues,
but those guys thought OTLs were a step above. So that got me thinking that it would be nice to know
which direction the next project will take me, up or down?

There is a "buzz" around the recent Kaneda (still active and prolific guy) shematic SS pre and amp which are said to sound very good. The shems are published in a japanese mag. The french forum Melaudia thanks google translation have several threads about it.
Have you tried the SIT sauce transistor amp a la Papa Nelson for something else different flavor ? If I have monney for a diy amp I wether choose one from them

There is a Kaneda Class A 50 W described in l'Audiophile 1984:

with a tail in January 1985:
