I'm looking for a little imput on how best to utilize my Bose 402 loudspeakers. I ended up with a nice pair that I got for free and have been using them as rear surround speakers.
My question has to do with the active equalizer that bose seems to require in order to get the best sound. I have a yamaha receiver that does the auto configure and equalization thing for the whole room and it seems to do a pretty good job. Should I invest in the active equalizer for the surround speakers speakers instead of using the parametric equalizer of the reciever? Do you think I'm missing out on much by not using the actrive eq? I would also be interested in knowing what the bose active eq is really doing to add the life into their speaker system.
As a side note, I've read a few threads where some folks don't seem to be too keen on bose speakers so I am aware of those opinions. Since I got them for free I can't complain too much.

I'd say try 'em without the controller. If they suck, I'm sure someone could recommend a 4.5" Tang Band or other full range driver.

If you like them, keep them. Though there are much better speakers around, they certainly ain't free! 🙂
From past experience with 402s, you need about a 3dB boost below 120, a 3dB cut around 1.2K with a width of about an octave, and a 3dB boost above about 10K.
However, if 402s fetch a decent price on eBay I would just sell them, rather than spending money improving them...
