I have some old Boston Accoustics A60 speakers and their 8 inch woofers need to be replaced, but Boston Accoustics does not provide spare parts anymore.
I look for advice on what replacement speakers to use.

Hi,
Blown coils or are the surrounds shot ? Substituting bass/mids is a
complete lottery compared to substituting tweeters, repairing the
bass/mids if it is the surrounds that are gone is the best option.

I just gutted a pair of A70 with bad foam and noticed there was no xo on the woofers, so that makes replacements a bit of a gamble (unless you can see a FR curve to see how bad cone break-up is).
But on the other hand, I also found several cheapies (under $20) in the US that matched for efficiency and were suitable in a sealed cabinet. Madisound and Parts Express still has some.
I think they deserve a half-decent xo, so now's your chance!

Thanks for the responses.
But please excuse my ignorance: What is an xo that Tosh is referring to.
You can see, I need any help I can get, so if you can give me a suggestion for a type and model for replacement bass speakers for these Boston Acoustics A60 that would be wonderful.
To be precise about the (visible) damage: the foam part that connects the paper cone to the outside which is a little bulge is damaged or shall I say disintegrated in several places.
So any suggestion of how I can get this fixed in London, UK, are highly appreciated.
Thank you

Crossover (xo): A filter network that separates high and low frequencies going to tweeter and woofer.
If the 8 inch drivers are similar to what came out of my (1983) A70, I wouldn't pay to re-foam them (although this would make good practice for you), but would search for a new surplus driver.
When I was looking here in US, I found this one at Madisound (for example) which would probably be an acceptable replacement:
Madisound# POLK8-4
PS. You'll pay through the nose to have a shop repair these in London, so I encourage you to do it yourself. And it's an easy swap once you find the right driver.
PPS. Madisound also has Vance Dickason's Loudspeaker Design Cookbook 6th ed on sale, which is a good intro to loudspeakers.

Hello FWH, If you are fairly good with your hands, and have good eyes, I think Tosh idea about trying to refoam the woofers yourself has merit. I own a pair of A70's that I refoamed a couple years ago. They sound a lot better than speakers of that price should, at least to me. Refoaming isn't difficult, you just have to be able to follow directions, and have patience.
I'm not sure if they deliver to Britain, but there is a seller on ebay, GeoAliWil, that supplies refoam kits. They are the source I used. The standard kit comes with the surrounds for two woofers, necessary adhesive, shims and other parts, plus good instructions with pictures. There are only a couple of tools you need to supply yourself, and then tell you what they are. By no means are they the only seller of repair kits, but I did have a good experience with them, and the instructions are very clear.
Peace,
Dave
