Hi everyone,
This is my first Thread here, so I hope I posted in the right Category.
I've bought a used Cervin Vega Sub/Sat system a few weeks ago, but I don't know much about this system and I even don't know if the sub and the sats belong together), so I wanted to ask if anyone knows something about these.
In the attachment there's a picture of them. If needed, I can take more detailed pictures.
What I know about the system :
The sub has no label anymore, so anything I know is that it's a 15" sub with a standard surround (not an M shape like on PA-Drivers). It has a passive lowpass and an hipass for the sats. The crossover frequency seems to be quite low (below 100 Hz).
The sats have a label which says the type is P10 but doesn't tell anything else. They are fitted with a 10" woofer and a small tweeter which seems to be an hybrid between ring diaphragm and horn. The woofer has no lowpass and the hipass has a 12 dB slope with a crossover frequency I estimate at about 4 kHz.
I hope someone knows more about these or maybe has some old catalogs, where some information can be found.
Regards,
Denis

I can't say I have seen those before but they appear to be a home audio speakers not PA speakers.. just so you know.
It's hard to know if they are PA or Home Audio - there's nothing like them on the Cervin website, and the model number finds little except your posts on two forums. Don't you have a better model number for them?.
Just my thoughts..
removable cloth grills and foam or rubber surrounds usually means home audio, and if they have push button or screw terminal binding posts on the back for the speaker cables that is another sign, Pro cabs(even from CV) usually have 1/4 or speakon connectors in a dish depending upon the vintage.
But that's not to say these things won't get pro audio speaker loud, they actually should get pretty loud because that is one thing all CV speakers seem to have in common.

That's an interesting point of view. Concerning the sub, I already had doubts if it could be a home hifi one.
As the sats have woofers with a pa-like cloth M-shaped surround and a compression driver
I thought they are pa. But as they have the removable cloth grill which I didn't take in concern, along with other facts like the push button and screwed terminals they definetly seem to be home hifi.
Maybe a mod could move the thread in the home hifi section ?
You are right with thinking the speakers go loud, I estimate their efficiency to about 95dB per watt.
Does someone know where to find old cv catalogs?
I think the speakers have been built in the early 90s, which would give us a point to start with.

Denis

Have you e-mailed the manufacturer?
Supply photos of the rear, including close-ups of the part numbers etc.
I'd stick them in a room with a DCX2496 (or miniDSP) and a few amplifiers - 4.2 surround sound!

Chris
i'd pull the drivers and check what they are.
the thing that makes me wonder about whether these are legitimate product is the aluminum labels with the "red" those where only found on product that where produced before the 80's(older V32's and B38's)
i also wonder about the 10 inch drivers the color of the surrounds doesn't seem right the 15's have the normal fade of older Cerwin stuff.
i'd venture someone made boxes and loaded drivers that are cosmetically treated to look like C/V stuff

I didn't email the manufacturer yet, as I had no time to take the drivers out to take a look at the part numbers.
I'll take the drivers out tomorrow and make more pictures and by the way email the manufacturer.
@ Chris : This would be a great thing, but I only have one of the two systems shown on the picture. I took the picture which the seller had placed in his ad. So I can just do a 2.1 system but that will be enough for my quite little room. I thought about modifying the system and even making an active one like you suggested, that's why I wanted to know more about it.
@ turk : I think the color of the surrounds of the 10's hasn't changed over the years since it is a cloth surround which I suppose to keep their color unlike the foam ones.

The 10's look to be the same as these. These are Cerwin Vega MV-15's. They are intended as a pub speaker, not really suited for live music.
Yours look like a similar combo. I'm thinking the woofers were replaced with HiFi units.
I would buy two regular plate amps or one big one for the woofers and run the satellite from whatever you have now.

Thanks for your answer.
Yes, they seem to be the same. I just took a look at google concerning the MV-15's but there's not more information to find about them than about the P10's, except some comments which say that they're not really good.
Mine really look like a mish mash. That's why I wondered if the really belong together especially as the sub seems to be designed for really low-bass (which isn't quite PA-like) and there seems to be a dip in the frequency response between the sub and the sats.
Do you think it is worth the effort to try modifying them or would it just be better to sell them as they are and start a diy project from the scratch ?

That's up to you. CV's have always been a speaker than sounds better in large spaces and outdoors venues IMHO. They're all about grunt, not finesse. The only one who knows if you like them is you. 🙂
Hi everyone,
I'm sorry it lasted a bit longer, but I was absolutely lacking time the last few days.
I now took pictures of the drivers back sides, with the drivers ID-numbers. You'll find them in the attachment. (In that order : sub crossover, sub driver, sat tweeter, sat woofer, sat crossover, sat terminal)
The system seems to have been manufactured in 1990 as the manufacturing dates of the drivers are from late 1989 and early 1990.
Now I'm quite sure the system is a mish-mash as from the magnet of the 15" woofers quite too small for a PA Driver and even smaller than the one of the 10" driver. So the sub is definitely taken from the Hifi section.
The sub's crossover seems to have been modified.
@ Cal Weldon : In their current condition they're not completely suiting my taste, but they have some charm so I think with a little tweaking they could do the thing

Denis

Hello Denis. If I remember correctly the magnet size on my 15" is smaller than the 10" also so the only thing we can go on is that PA drivers normally have an accordion surround. Both of your boxes look like PA so again, it may just be the woofers were replaced. Another strange thing is that the P10 binding post looks like it is for home use with the screw type and banana plug. Never seen that on PA stuff.

What makes you think that?.

Ok, thanks for the information. The terminals look quite strange for PA, especially on the Sub, where they're just pushbutton types which are designed for quite small wires (more than 1.5mm2 won't fit).
What makes you think that?.
The first thing I noticed when looking at the crossover is that there are two different types of hot glue used to attach the crossover parts to the Terminal, one seems to be newer as it is whiter. The caps for the hipass aren't glued although there's glue under them and their capacitance (2 x 220uF in series, so in fact just 110 uF) seems to be much too low.
Additionally the cables from the crossover to the the woofer are two types from different brands connected together as if they were lengthened.

Denis
I think I know what those are--and why.
Back in the 60's to early 90's, the US military was big into audio. They sold so much higher end audio that manufacturers would make military only models. The big brands
back then where JBL, Infinity, Bose, Cerwin Vega, Klipsch, KEF etc. For instance, Cerwin Vega made the D series for consumer use and the M series for the military. The M series used PA drivers and more protection in the crossovers. They were also very LOUD and durable--perfect for the target audience.
Not brandy snifter hi-fi, but when teamed up with a Yamaha M-80 or Carver M1.5t amplifier and a pocket full of fuses...instant block party. The next morning, plug in the KEF 104.2 speakers to sooth the hangover.
The P10 was not a big seller because it was not as loud as the M series and sat/sub systems were supposed to be small (Bose AM-5) Catch 22 for the time.
I'd rebuild the crossovers and give it a shot--easy to swap the sub with a more modern edition to get it smooth.

I just came across this thread. I know it's almost a year old. I have that same set of speakers. They are quite old. I purchased mine back in the summer of 1986 in Hawaii on Hickam AFB from a Cerwin Vega vendor. The price back than was around $800. I got mine on clearance for $192. The last set. I was told they were for small venues like in a studio or small stages. There is a difference in your speaker foam on the P10's. Mine are gray and cloth. Besides that, they look the same. I still own them and they still sound great and never had a problem with them. That's 29 years of use without any kind of failure. I have them paired up to 2 NAD 2155's in bridged mode with a NAD preamp along with a set of PD2s and Polk Audio for better highs. Everything is from 1986 and still sounds great. As a matter of fact I just did a wedding reception 2 weeks ago with them without a problem. I used mine in home normally since 1986 for music mostly and to reinforce the surround sound speakers.
