chipped magnet - sound changes?

Would a chip of this size make a noticeable difference to the sound quality of he unit, which is a radian 850-pb?

Because of the missing material no but the way and time when the chip happened may well do.
That is to say if the chip happened due to a sharp knock after the material was magnetized it may have demagnetized partially or completely.

AlNiCo magnets are VERY susceptible to demagnetizing due to shock but not through heating. Ferrite magnets like the one in your picture are the reverse.

maybe, maybe not ...depends

if the magnet had a small fracture, such small piece could easily fall off, and look like now
and it may not matter much

but if it was caused by a hard punch, or from being dropped, it might have caused more severe damage
loosened poleplate, or whatever
it may not be clearly visible

not long ago I bought a pair of 'clearance' woofers
one was very clearly damaged
looked like it had been dropped
other driver was ok, and I could compare them

it was audible, yes
sounded brighter, and with less punch

but it also looked worse than yours, and with several cracks etc.

I oftenly buy drivers from Madisound. Sometimes they come with chips all around the magnets. I think that´s because I´m in Argentina and packages are not handled properly, despite of beeing filled with dampening material inside.
But I measure all my units when they arrive here (T&S parameters, frequency response, impedance, phase) and I never saw any sign of damage or change in any measurement comparing to another good looking unit. I´m talking about many little chips, almost as big as yours. So if the cone moves right, I wouldn´t be worried about that.

If you like, I can ship drivers to you packaged more securely - if you buy some expensive drivers in the future that you wish to arrive not damaged.

One way is to screw them to a piece of plywood before you ship them. Other ways are just very careful packing, packing them very tightly so they can't shift and bang into each other, and, pieces of cardboard between each driver's magnets.

I have often shipped to customers overseas, or as a favor to people on these forums. (They pay for shipping still, but I usually charge less than the companies like Parts Express charge for international shipping).

Are the broken chips right there stuck to the magnet body when you receive it?

I can't see what would the magnet break its edges against if it comes packed correctly padded.

If the small pieces are missing then it was shipped already chipped.

mine looked like this

only the high res photos revealed how serious the damage really was

so my advise is to always check more carefully

and it may not be directly audible
but only heard as modestly raised distortion
