Connecting turntable to Philips AG9016

Hi,

I bought for few weeks ago a Philips AG9016. Now I want to connect my technics MK2 1210 to this amplifier. This is here I need your help guys. How to connect the player to the amplifier? I test directly but the sound coming out is very poor. Do I need to connect an external phone stage between the turntables and the amplifier? Should this unit work?

Or, can I use the legacy power transformer and run two extra ECC83, so I can build an internal Phono stage (see picture). Are grateful for all your answers...

Hi, e00rica

''Do I need to connect an external phone stage between the turntables and the amplifier?''
Yes you need to ''equalise'' the output from your cartridge (moving magnet or MM I expect) then it will sound correct. (Look up RIAA curve to see.) So you need a Phono / RIAA amplifier.

''Should this unit work?''
No, that's just a pre amp it does not 'equalise' the output from your cartridge.

I too would start with something cheap and simple and silicon. Not sure you will tell any difference through the old Philips.

Your amp is from a time, and price range, when Crystal or Ceramic (piezo) cartridges were the norm. (They do not need equalisation in the same way as MM/MC cartridges.) So there is an alternative, buy another head shell for the 1210 and buy a Ceramic cartridge it might be a good match ...

...The turntable 1210 will be connected in two ways (switch). One way will be to the Philips and the other way to my technics su-c1000 Preamplifier.....to buy a RIAA amplifier like this one:
What du you think?

Those phono preamps in the stamped tanks are uniformly awful. Low gain, or high gain with low overload. Gross errors of RIAA EQ. While it might, as one reviewer said, sound OK with a BOSE, it may make your Philips sound cheap.

You already HAVE a very fine phono preamp, in the SU-C1000. You won't approach its quality for $100, you already have it, and already wired to the turntable. Find the cord to connect its RCA "Tape Out" jacks to the Philips' "Tape In" DIN jack. When you want to listen to the Philips, leave the Technics powered-up but turned-down. To listen to whatever the Technics is normally feeding, turn the Philips off and turn-up the Technics.

The SU-C1000 phono has a decent opamp +plus+ a discrete JFET input stage, more gain, less hiss. It has ample supply voltage. It has a full 4-piece RIAA EQ network. It has an eye-popping input RF filter. (The stamped-tanks use 2 junk transistors total, low supply voltage, a 3-piece network of low-tolerance parts, no RF filtering.)

(You could go into the Philips "Cer Phono" jacks, and get a bit more gain, but you should not need the gain, and the DIN plug is much easier to find than whatever that is on the Philips' phono input.)

e00rica, you may need to buffer your preamp with another tube or transistor to properly load the preamp. if your amp has a 500k input impedance ( resistance) or higher then it is OK with a short cable as drawn.
A low output MC cartridge will require an level EQ 20db gain stage or matching transformer to use with your tube preamp circuit.

Hi,
Thank you so much for all your posts and I'm very sorry for the delay on mypart. I tested the proposal from PRR. The one that connects the SU-1000 (RECoutput) to DIN in AG9016. I have to say that the sound that flows out of thespeakers is clear and the gain is enough for me. I keep this solution! Anyway,I have a few more questions to you (I'm not sure if they belong to thisthread). Now that I have the turntable connected in two ways (MK2 1210
àSU-C1000àSE-A100and MK2 1210àSU-C1000àPhilips AG9016). How can I do to connect a pair of speakers to these twoways of connections? Should I need any kind of switch? If yes, do you have anysuggestions?
Thanks!
