Like many on the forum, I make most of my own cables. I recently found something that has made it a bit easier to solder some types of connectors. It is a bit pricey, but has saved some burnt/hot fingers. It is a rather nice block of silicon so it's not going to melt at solder temperatures.
I have no vested interest in the product, just a satisfied customer.
YMMV

Looks nice for heavy users. For light users, the connector can be mounted in its intended
chassis mounting hole for soldering, perhaps turned around on the outside for better access.
Or, you can punch out suitable holes in a piece of aluminum that is weighted enough
to stay put, or else is attached to the bench.

I work in the world of video production and for me it's not uncommon to have to make a number of cables at a time.
Just another tool in the arsenal.

We called them solder blocks in our shop, for want of a better name.
We had one made of a hunk of 4x4 wood, with a flat bit of plywood as a base. We had another made of two pieces of 2x6, one set at right angles to the other. Then we mounted various connectors on the block.
Unfortunately none of these remind you to put the connector cover over the cable BEFORE soldering on the connector itself.

I am totally with you Enzo. I was recently wiring a 00 Lemo for a microphone and forgot one of the pieces, Argh!!
Pipe nipple? Very cool idea.
My go-to for holding a round thing I want to be steady is a rubber band around my combination pliers.

Would a regular third-hand holder do? I use it for soldering (not only) connectors with no problem, but no large quantities.
For XLR's etc a third hand is not rigid enough. Multiconductor cables AN style are the biggest PITA. (Audio research??)
drpro: Where did you get that tool? I could not find it.

Just ordered the hot holder - will report back. I don't make a lot of cables but this looks like just the thing for such chores
I just drill a hole in a bit of scrap wood and use that.
Once it gets too holy I throw it away and start over with a fresh bit of scrap wood.
