converting 35mm cinema projector to digital

Hi,

I'm wondering if it would be possible to fit an lcd panel or dlp array into an old 35mm cinema projector to convert it into a diy digital projector.

I was thinking of finding an old lcd projector, taking out the lcd element and fitting it into the space where the film would normally run between the lamp and the lens to see what happens. I don't know what size the elements in lcd projectors are but 2" should fit.

I can think of two immediate issues. Firstly the screen is 6 metres wide (and 20 metres away from the projector) so the image might be rather pixelated. Secondly the lamp is 2kW so unless I actively cool the panel it would probably get very hot.

Will this work ? What other issues will I encounter ?

its been done with 35mm slide projector and a pocket tv but with it you will get a horrid picture and will suffer with screen door very badly

to get any sort of decent picture you would need a very small hi res lcd and thats gonna cost a hell of a lot

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback. I had a feeling the reason that nobody seems to have done it is because the results are rubbish ! I assume lcd projectors must use larger panels. £40,000 for a commercial digital projector is too much for us to contemplate though 🙁

for a simple quick hi res HD projector i would suggest a ohp and lcd monitor setup or if resolution isn't an issue then try scouring ebay

ive managed to pick up a few working projectors for less than £50 delivered
