Cubo Sub

Along with the Cubo 12, Cubo 15, Cubo 18, there came a sub just called the "Cubo Sub", you could stick any decent woofer in it from 12" to 21"

The creator describes it as: "Tapped Rear Loaded Band Pass Horn" which can go down to 30Hz.

I am ok with Tapped Horn basics, but I don't understand how the "Rear Loaded Band Pass" bit works would someone here explain the theory to me?

Here is a copy of the plans which can be found at https://www.freespeakerplans.com/plans/14-plans/basscab/6-cubo-sub

I built a Cubo 15 extended(same as the Cubo sub just a little smaller) to see what all the commotion was about and all I can say is it works as advertised, this box has on average 6dB more output than the same driver in a reflex box and it responds well to horn extensions or barn doors. The "bandpass horn" thing is kind of a redundant description as all horns are bandwidth limited.. maybe this one is a little more limited that others, and the "rear loaded" part should be self explanitory.

A Band pass horn is one that uses a ported chamber to increase the efficiency of the speaker below the range that the horn loading is effective. This allows the speaker to have a short path length. The trade off is the volume needed for the chamber.
As the Cubo design utilises a chamber, it needs less wood, so is lighter and has more internal volume compared to a conventional tapped horn of the same size.
(That drawing looks familiar to me as I drew it up for Johan!)🙂

Hi Erknie,

Post #4: "What causes the 5Hz frequency shift when you go from magnet in horn, to magnet in chamber configuration?"

Mainly chamber volume change. Secondarily change of diaphragm position. Use Hornresp to evaluate.

Yes you can. But I would not use that big enclosure for 12" driver.. its kind of, nonsense. There are lots of box plans better suited for 12" drivers.

I wouldnt call cubo as a band pass horn. Typically they are 4th bandpass with flared port/horn. Pretty efficient design and mainly used for midbass/kick duty. Turbosound is the one that made lots of band pass horns back then.. there are also free plans for such a designs like ES18BPH, HD15 ans USB bass bin.

Cubo acts more like reflex having big flared port, it does have some gain boost at midbass. But also many trade offs..
