There's a guy on Ebay selling mp3 players w/remote that run off USB and the little camera card storage devices that sounds really decent. Only likes CBR mp3's though.

Not exactly a kit, but it's still relatively cheap, supports more file formats, and has video output for a display. It would be easy enough to put in a fancy chassis.

Got me thinking....
One of these with HDD of course. Add a good low jitter clock upgrade (PFM Flea?), low noise supplies (class-d regs?), and a good quality output stage (Secal class-a output stage perhaps?).
Would that then make an audiophile MP3 player?
I smell a project coming on!!!
EDIT: Wondering what the DAC is like on these things. If no good, I suppose one could use something better like the Twisted pear offerings.
lol! maybe to some it is, but it is becoming increasingly popular among 'audiophiles'. Ive not heard a high end system using MP3 source but know its fairly common these days.
But many anaphylactic to mp3's have no problem with an FM tuner on it ;^)
