DIY Speakon cable

First time trying to do this.

There are 2 and 4 pole Speakon connectors (even 8).

I will use this cable for my home audio. No bi-amping or bi-wiring. I read that 4 pole is for bi-amping. Does it also mean for bi-wiring?

Would not be future proof to get the 4 pole if in the future I want to bi-wire (not-bi amp) if I get bi-wireable speakers?

Will be using a pro amplifier hence the desire to build a speakon cable.

Funny that you mention it, as I was considering the same thing yesterday. I believe that it would be more than reasonable to get a 4 pole so yes, that it can be used either way at the other end. This means, how you wire it will determine the use for it. Bi-wiring or bi-amping are possible using this 4 pole option.

I would get 4 pole and if your amp has speakon outputs just check on the manual which set of pins it uses. Yea go Neutrik, plugs are cheap, its cable that you need a morgage for haha
This is what it says.

I have used Speakon connectors at my speakers for decades. I make my own cables, but some cable companies have Speakons as an option.

Use the 4-pole and, yes, buy the real deal, Neutrik.

I have no idea why this is not the standard at home audio as well. It is super easy and you know once it is locked, it is not going anywhere. I don't like the spades or bananas but I have to use them almost all the time at home audio.

Go for Neutrik and 4pole ( iirc they are cross compatible with 2poles one anyway - depend how you wire them). If you can source it use Mogami loudspeaker cable with it (w3104) in quad configuration and be happy forever ( i've been for more than 10 years). Could be used for biwiring as such too but like russc said it's a waste of money ( and did not stand comparison with quad config on the loudspeaker i tried: quad give feeling to have gained an octave both ends of spectrum! Still i ended with multiamp setup and dsp and cable/speakon allowed it anyway). And if you like big, it's good to have garden hoze size kind of cable. 😂

Why it's not used in home audio? Because people needs to make money on your back, people fear what come from proworld (for irrational reason) and why bother with something simple, sturdy and secure when you can have complex, fragile and potentialy dangerous ( for gear but not only if you use high power amp)?

People are amazing... 🙂

The audio market has a lot of inertia to change, which is why we still have dreadful RCA connectors on everything. Ironically recording media have been repeatedly innovated over the decades, connectors much less so. Fortunately the sketchy DIN loudspeaker connectors died a death at least, wobbly as a loose tooth they were.

Freaking RCA connectors! No doubt I have other eye rolling reactions to a few other connectors, but the RCA jack connection is at the top of my list. With the varying degrees of too tight to too loose fit of these connectors, I am wondering if there is an actual standard? Worst of all in these cases is the fact that we are dealing with a measly 1 volt or so audio signal yikes, somebody let me the hell out of here.

Now what company was it that made you use their speaker cables by way of a weird connector on the amp end?

Be aware.. there are many commercial cables with the 4 pole connector but they are still not fully terminated i.e. only two wires are run inside. Better check before you buy. I hade some shops open the connector - but no, only two wires...

Now I'm hearing that they are more or less phased out - even on the professional sida as active speakers are becoming the standard.

So, I asked this question to Neutrik but did not really get an answer other than use one wire per terminal.

My question was using this Kimber cable connecting to 4-pole Speakon connector; two red wires to +1 terminal, the other two reds to +2, two blacks to -1, two blacks -2.

The speaker end which my speakers are not bi-wireable; connect four red wires to red, four black wires to black.

Something like this:
Two red +1
Two red +2
Two black -1
Two black -2

Four red to red binding post
Four black to black binding post

Would this be a correct way of connecting? I think yes but not 100% sure because I have no experience with Speakon.
