Hello people,
I have invested myself in a 2-way speaker design which uses a horn compression driver for upper midrange and high frequency. Because of the physical offset due to the horn of several centimeters between woofer and compression driver, the time alignment is rather difficult, not to say not really possible without ... a DSP function to calculate a delay. This is why I turned towards the idea to get myself two Hypex Fusionamps. For upgradeabilities-sake, I was thinking about FA123 (3 channel, only using two both woofer amps in bridge-tied mode). But my budget finds 800 euros for amps alone is quite a sum, rendering the whole speaker project less a entry level approach. Some very good high end entry level speakers and amp could also be obtained for the same money. Yet, I want to stick to the topology.
Is there any knowledge of performative alternatives? I could get myself two Behringer A800 and a MiniDSP 2x4 used for 350, but I think the A800 has some hollow sounding mids and the MiniDSP 2x4 was tested with intransparent performance. Are there other option out there that I do not know of yet? If not I will probably stick to the Hypex option, but maybe I have missed something.
All the best
Marinus

Original MiniDSP 2x4 is very noisy and this will be a problem for your comp drivers unless you use an L-pad. Opt for the 2x4HD which is considerably quieter.
How about two of these which use Hypex UCD180 modules and PSU?

Or the 3e tpa3251 4x100w that I use with a MiniDSP 10x10 with balanced signal and spdif in.

I would pad down the comp unless you want to get very high end and obsess over gain structure to get good enough SNR to avoid the dreaded hiss. Even the JBL M2 pads down its comp by 9dB. If you get the comp down to 100dB/1W then the 3E audio amps and DSP work well. Weakest part for noise is the DSP but this could be upgraded (and is cheap), one thing to be aware of is that the signal driving the 3E amps must be true balanced (not impedance balanced).
I agree with kipman however, remember the 3e DSP is more of a set-and-forget module rather than the instantly accessible DSP units.
Is the miniDSP 2x4 balanced also acceptable if I pad the CD, which I planned anyway? I can get one for 100 euros and could begin with a 2x behringer a800 + miniDSP and later upgrade.
What DSP comibantion do you suggest with the TPA3255?

Yes, with the 2x4BAL I would pad it down maybe 12db+ but you will have to literally play it by ear until you're happy with input/output gains. There is an internal gain setting on that unit IIRC.
I really like the MiniDSP format, I think it's a strong move to get started and good integration with REW.
Depending on your set up my feeling is that the TPA3255 is overkill for domestic situations, especially with high sensitivity drivers. But... more watts never killed anyone.
Further, the more power you have the more you have to think about gain structure with a bi-amped DSP set up as you'll unlikely not get anywhere near half power on a TPA3255 in a domestic situation and your amps will be amplifying a of of noise. However the same can be said for the Behringer A800 but I believe kipman has experience with this amp.

The Behringer is fine below 20 watts IIRC, the thing is that I am not a big fan of the mids it reproduces, they are hollow. Bass is great, no surprise, it is detailed, but not so smooth. It's far away from the Hypex NCores also, yet the price. Behringer A800 Stereo Amplifier Review | Audio Science Review (ASR) Forum Compared to 1980s High End, it's SINAD is okay again ... I was just wondering if I can have a DSP, I then need Bi-amping, for a cheaper price and with decent sound aswell.
A little bit off topic but kipman, as you are already here and based on your interest, you may be the right to answer my question: Is there a line-fader mixer that satisfies high end audio standards when it comes to transparency, which does not cost a fortune? If I use the Hypex plate amps, I do not need a preamp but an input selector would be useful and as I would like to get myself a mixer console sometime, I thought this might be the right device.
mmm yamaha (MG series) do some small mixers that are acceptable in terms of noise (better than Behringer xenyx). My friend was using the xenyx with some powered speakers and had unacceptable hiss, switching to the Yamaha fixed it. Specs don't look to be state of the art but in practice no problems.
Hi,
I have some Pascal modules if you want, Rouge Audio, Dynaudio and high ends brand are using it in their best amps. They perform very well and easy to assemble.
Send me private message if interested.

Interesting.I have some Pascal modules
Any idea how easy to feed from DC battery power? Looking for clean 200+Wpc
High voltages are OK; I routinely deal with big power banks, EV applications etc.

No idea because these modules are all using internal SMPS PSU. The AC input is 110 / 220 V (like the Hypex Ncore MP serie)

Often can feed DC at say 270V direct in at a certain point,
"full bridge rectifier"?
but I'm not sufficiently au fait with the tech
