Has anyone experienced a problem with this?
I played Independence Day R4 the other night and it was no go
. Got to the copyright info and it came up with a disc error. I was able to force it to play for over 1 hour and it went nuts with blocking and freezing. Apparently this DVD does have a known problem with going off after a period of time. Previously it had played without a hitch for several years on numerous players but all the players (BD, DVD) I have now gave it the flick.
The disc looks fine and the reflective layer looks intact. The only issue I can see is the coating on the edge of the disc has been poorly applied and misses more than in covers so air could get into the reflective layer. I've checked out several other discs and only seems a problem on R4 20th Century Fox DVDs. Maybe time to drag out the old green pen (or something else???) to cover the disc edge.
I've got hundreds of DVDs and this was the first and hopefully the last to self destruct.
