Economic sub for 110dB ZLX12p extension

Well if you have the Electro-Voice ZLX-12P 12-inch Two-Way you should be buying the subs. (Just kidding it's a PA stuff) You don't get lower F <100Hz. and 80's Hz if w/active speaker. You just forgot linking to specs for our info. 😀

You said you want to use an 18"? And what size for enclosure you are admitting for the exterior dimensions/volume. If you back to another thread there is another member building one. You might need two if the SPL is not enough. Good luck with your sub. 😀

Originally I thought I could get away without a sub, just compensating by external base boost but the DSP limiter and filter in the ZLX12P means this is not possible or doesn't have the desired effect.

Noooo I dont want to use an 18" in fact I was commenting that the box designed to go with the ZLX12P (ELX118) didnt have very good LF extension anyway and all the 18" drivers I looked at were IMOP far to expensive. In any case given my space limitations and moderate SPL requirement (110dB @80hZ) a big XMAX 12" is a far better choice for me and still give >80dB @10hZ (this is shown in the original attached graph).
Ohh I didn't attach the ZLX12P specs originally as I found them somewhat inaccurate and IMOP misleading so instead I attached my own measurements!
Amplifier is on the slow boat from china and by all accounts will need a severe workover before letting it anywhere near a decent driver 🙂

...I cannot cope with the lack of bottom end anymore and am forced to consider adding a sub... I became rapidly shocked at the cost of components these days

Hi colossusfan,

Perhaps you should look at the MTH30 or if you need 40Hz/-3dB the Thorn-F1 and use for instance the very affordable 'The Box' 12-280/8-W (£38.48 a piece). The driver behaves excellent in both designs and deliver serious output @ 80Hz (more than you requested) because the designs are high efficient (tapped horns).

Cheers,
Djim

Have you turned your system up and walked around the house or building?? You might be getting cancelation in your room. I fought a lack of bass in my home office for a year then one weekend my wife came storming in and demanded I turn the bass OFF!

"The Box" 12" driver looks nice, but there's no Xmax rating. Difficult to sim what it's output capability would be like without that.

How do you like the EV? I am contemplating one myself.

Used them for a while. They're pretty solid, but hit the limiters too easily outdoors - need a sub for that. Apart from that, we chuck them around and use them for all sorts, never any problems.

IMO, they have adequate LF response if the correct settings are used, including telling the on-board DSP whether its in free space, on-stage etc etc.

I use with my zlx12, 2 or 4 behringer vp1800s subwoofers. With some bass enchangement they sound great to gether and they are not expensive. I use also a behringer inuke 3000 amp with the subs.

I use dbx driverack pa2. For sub lowpass at 18Hz/48db, highpass 85Hz/24db.
Bassenchangement at 24Hz and 32Hz. This is a intern effect of the dbx. Further Auto EQ for the zlx12 for roomcorrection. Super gear.

Sound quality is very good. There are better dsp but also more expensive.

OK. I'll bite; but having a hard time understanding your goals. 110db@80Hz and 80db@10Hz? My gut is telling a THAM15 would work. Lots of drivers sim well in it.

How do you like the EV? I am contemplating one myself.

Thanks for the suggestion 🙂 the THAM15 looks nice but I am avoiding horns and vented enclosures for two reasons, one is the rather high cutoff frequency and the other is poor transient response (IMOP)!

The ZLX12p is excellent value for money BUT by no means the loudest boy on the block, the HF horn is amazing and the limiter is nice and soft, just gradually flattens the dynamic range without being to noticeable. As I said the main shortcoming is the LF that starts to rolloff at around 80hZ quite steeply irrespective of the DSP settings, I didn't realize till recently the enclosure is ported so my guess is given its small size the tuning frequency is rather high, you might want to look at its 15 inch brother but from the plots its not a deal better 🙂 all in all you get what you pay for but it is good, just needs a sub 🙂 Ohh output is about 110dB not whatever they claim lols.

Hi and thanks for your comments 🙂 I am sorry but I am horn/port adverse for very low bottom ends, always a problem with high (relevantly) cutoff frequencies IMOP. I to was interested in that driver but there's no T/S params for it and the company dont answer Emails so I have discounted them, there's a nice long throw (>14mm) JBL for ~£40 if your search 🙂

Thank you for your reply 🙂 I have tried it in a few different rooms/locations and its much the same, the wife always complains anyway even if I have my headphones on !!

Many thanks for the reply but these are £145 and I am a cheepskate, also ported and cutoff somewhere above 35hZ (no proper plots on site) so dont meet my criteria in several ways but I am sure they sound wonderful in your rig 🙂

Sound quality decent? Is there HP in the DSP? Curious about the interplay of DSP and a sub and the best way to run it.
yeah the sound quality is excellent especially the HF much better than some chinese companies I have heard (although this is also made in china but to an EV design). Yes its very clear the DSP has several layers of HP, for example to stop the LF driver exceeding its small Xmax after port cutoff, there is very little difference between setting its optional sub HP to 80hZ and the performance with no sub selected!
