Hi,
I have the opportunity to get my hands on a used & cheap emu 1616m with pci interface. My PC only has pci-express, so I was wondering if it is worthwile to get the card and a pci-to-pci-express adapter card? I want to use the card for measurement only, so getting an old second computer is not really an option (WAF is not on my side this time ;-)
Does anybody have experience with this kind of setup? The main question is, would it affect the performance of the soundcard for measurement purposes?
thanks, and best regards!

I believe the PCIe versions of these cards just have a PCI-PICe bridge on them and the rest of the card is the same, so your idea should work well.
If the price is in the $150 or less its a a great deal. The PCIE to PCcard adapter should work fine. It is a very good ADC-DAC and good for measurements. The control software Patchmix is a bear to master. I use the rear connectors as stereo pairs that I "send" to Windows or ASIO directly. If you can you should test all the I/O's for function. I have had a few samples that were broken. Its really hard to work on inside and no documentation exists so beware of problems or mods.
Thanks for the input, I will try to walk that way... I shall report back on how things turned out.

Just a short info, i got the card yesterday, for 70 €/95 USD. Unfortunately, the power supply was missing, so I have to order a replacement part. Any requirements, except 48VDC, 380mA? The PCI -PCIe adapter is on its way, too, so maybe next week I have it all on my bench! Too curios.....

There are usually several supplies on eBay. You can build a linear supply but I have not seen a benefit in measurements for the effort yet and a problem with the supply will break a lot of unrepairables.
Finally, all parts together! I ordered a Delock 41341 Riser Card with dual PCI to PCIe adapter, and a generic 48V brick power supply for my 1616m.
First, I wanted to try my old M-Audio Delta 192 in the new PC, because I knew it was working, but the combination of Windows 8.1 and and the older drivers didn't work out, in fact the PC refused to boot even into BIOS/UEFI ... Maybe some odd combination of Windows 7 NOT SP1 driver might do the trick....
Anyways, I installed the Emu + beta drivers + Patchmix, and voila, that thing is working! Patchmix for sure is a hundred-headed beast, but at least I was able to get the standard session in all sampling rates to put out music to them headphones.... Beethoven and me got carried away, but I hope to figure out patchmix enough in the following days, to make a few loopbacks in ARTA.
Thanks for your help so far!

Happy camper!
Managed to get that patchmix to do what i want (the simplest possible setup), and there we go.... see attached pictures!
This is for sure the best setup I ever had, bought second hand for 140€ (70€ for the card, a rough 50€ for the riser card, and 20€ for the power supply). And for the time being, the system is as stable as one could ask for, no hickups so far....
Many thanks for the encouraging support to venture into the "pci-card-in-a-modern-computer" adventure!
best regards,

p.s. made a mistake in my last post, the riser card was a delock 41355, time for editing was over...
p.p.s. about time to build a soundcard interface... been eyeballin' the pete millet site for a while now ;-)

I am too in a similar predicament! I have a 1616M Cardbus version which I'm desperately trying to connect to my laptop! After researching & reading extensively I was dismayed to discover that no drivers or updates were released for Win 7/64 other than a Beta version in 2010-2011.
To make matters worse, my laptop doesn't have a PCMCIA (Cardbus 2) slot. but only an Expresscard slot! However, many claim to have been using this successfully with certain Cardbus/Expresscard adapter cards similar to the one below among a few. My laptop is as follows;
Lenovo X201
HD - WD 750Gb 7200 rpm
RAM- 8 Gb
OS - Win 7/64 Pro
DAW . Sonar 8.5 PE (Producer Edition)
I've now bought a Startech CB2EC adapter card which is supposedly working well with this!
So, is there anyone out there who has actually managed to get this combo working? If so I'd really love to hear from you. I'd be very grateful if you could list the installation sequence with problems & solutions you may have encountered & solved during the installation process. Thanks!
I am so desperate I could cry all day!

You're right, the driver issue is annoying. I am using those beta drivers as well, and ARTA, for example, is working flawlessly, whilst STEPS keeps on crashing instantly and reproducibly when starting a measurement.... I could not find a solution so far, and I'm even not sure if it's a STEPS or EMU issue...

Thank you hallodeletue for your reply. I will not be using this for any measurements, other than only for recording. So, I'm not sure if "steps" is relevant for my purpose or not. If only someone could tell me if it's worth or possible to configure this to WIN 7/64? It'll break my heart to give up on this interface, as it's a wonderful sounding unit comparable to if not better than RME HDSP9652 i.m.h.o!
Well, I got it running on Windows 8.1/64bit, and that STEPS issue is the only flaw I encountered so far.... Listening/recording works a treat!
Really? WOW! In that case would it be too much to ask if you could possibly tell me the installation process/sequence of this? I buried my head into this & tried to understand it, but it's all a bit overwhelming a.t.m!
I've already the installed the DAW....so what do I do next?
Do I configure the EMU card bus or the Expresscard 1st...it is plug & play actually! When should I install the "patchmix"? I gather it's a beast to tame no? I gather it works best in 48KHz?
Any links to this? I'm very happy on your behalf! Lucky you!
Thanks

I have been using patchmix at all of its frequencies but usually at 192 KHz. In Win 7 or Win 8 and the Windows sound interface you need to set the Windows sample rate to match the patchmix settings. If you get it backwards you get an error. or you get the windows sample rate converter which is not a good thing. Using ASIO goes around this but you can have conflicts between the app's requested sample rate and the patchmix sample rate and more error warnings, demands for changes from patchmix.
I believe you need to install the hardware and then install the software. The software won't install if it doesn't see the hardware. I may have the USB EMU stuff confused here.

Thank you indeed 1audio. I remember reading that at higher sample rates ie; 96/192 KHz the track count too is correspondingly reduced. I also read that the patchmix works best @ 48KHz in ASIO with the 1616M & doesn't do well at all in WDM! I'll find the link. Do you mean that I should have installed both the 1616M & Expresscard adapter before installing the Sonar DAW? Is your interface 1616M? This unit complicates things considerably due to it's outdated cardbus & drivers! I'm particularly interested in hearing from those who're using 1616m in Win7/64.
The handbook recommends removing all other audio drivers, installing the card, connecting the microdock, and then install the drivers (the driver package includes Patchmix as well). Thats the procedure I used, and so far thats it. Patchmix is hard in the beginning, but once you get the concept, it's immensly powerful. Somehow, the one article of the many I read, that made it all clear to me was this one:
Emu's Patchmix DSP Demystified...
I am using the card for measurements, and as a headphone amplifier with foobar2k, both via ASIO. Works great.

Many thanks! Just the sort of info I need! I've now downloaded a lot of info on configuring EMU & Sonar! here is one such below! I'll add the rest in due course. I'll be diving head 1st into installing this over the weekend & will report back!

Creative removed the website creativelabs along with beta drivers.
You can download them from internet archive.

What? really? I just checked the old emu site for driver updates for EMU 1616M & this link came up & it is still there! Thanks a lot for pointing this to me & for the link just the same.
