Eton tweeters any good?

Let's ignore the ER4 which has been discussed here and there. How're those Eton dome tweeters? The totl 29 HD2 and 28 HD1 is so-called Mg-ceramic hybrid, I don't know what exactly that means, but their prices are lower than the high priced Scan Be tweeters...

MToc if you are looking for very good, affordable tweeters, ScanSpeak and Vifa share some models. The Peerless/Vifa XT and DX tweeters are VERY very good for the price with extension past 20kHz. Requires careful integration as a result, but you cannot go wrong for the prices.

Absolutely not. 🙂 Quality of AMT's varies greatly, as does the skill of the integrating designer, not to mention the dispersion is different. There are great Be tweeters and crappy one's.

I am listening to some very nice AMT's by Mundorf, but the speakers I designed with the Peerless Ring radiators sound damn good next to them, considering the parts cost is about 1/10th. 🙂

Best,

Erik

I think the biggest problem with Eton's is lack of high-tech features in the motor and poor charts/specs compared to other makers. I would drop $200 on a ScanSpeak tweeter based purely on specs if it fit my design goals, but Eton.... I'd really have to listen to it before I spent money on them.

They have their fans though!

I recently built a pair of open baffle speakers with the Eton 29HD2 Magnesium/Ceramic 28mm Dome Tweeter.

It is a really nice tweeter and worth the price IMO. It sounds detailed yet smooth. The best part is the very low Fs, which allows me to use a 1st order series crossover. I like the way it looks as well.

I would definitely use it again in future builds, or perhaps the Eton 26HD3 if I didn't need to the low fs and wanted to save a little money.

I don't see a need to spend more on anything fancier or more expensive.

An update: I picked up an Eton 26HD3 for my center channel. I've been listening to it on its own (with just a 5.6uF capacitor) and as part of a complete speaker, comparing A/B with the Eton 29HD2. I also have the Eton ER4 and Bliesma T34A in some other speakers. Here is my subjective opinion:

  • The Eton 29HD2 is really something special! I'd say it is my all-time favorite tweeter. I prefer it even to the more expensive Bliesma T34A. The 29HD2 is smooth & mellow yet detailed. It has a very pleasing, darker sound without harshness. Cymbals are rendered with impressive realism. In terms of imaging, it positions vocals and percussion "further away" compared to the other tweeters. It's not quieter or blurred, just slightly recessed in the sound stage. I actually find this to be quite nice and non-fatiguing.
  • The Eton 26HD3 is fine but nothing special. Compared to the 29HD2, the 26HD3 is brighter, harsher and more fatiguing. It positions vocals and percussion more forward. It has good detail but sounds a bit more compressed than the others.
  • The ER4 has an effortless realism to it, but sounds uneven and weirdly scratchy. Cymbals are too hot and forward compared to the mids. Vocals sound off. It is my least favorite of the bunch.
  • The Bliesma T34A has a similar effortlessness as the ER4 but is much better overall. Of the bunch, it wins for cleanliness, accuracy and detail. It is very good. Yet, compared to the Eton 29HD2, I find the Bliesma somewhat sterile and boring. If I were building studio monitors I would probably go with the Bliesma. If I were building something I wanted to listen to day-after-day, the Eton 29HD2 is unbeatable.
  • Sadly, all the Eton tweeters have been nearly impossible to find online. Have they been discontinued? I hope not because I want more 29HD2's!
Hope this helps!
