Extending speaker cable

Hi,

I have recently brought a new stereo only to find that the speaker cables are directly wired into the speakers themselves (and bare wire at the other end).

Does anyone know what the best way to extend them is? Obviously I could just buy some decent OFC and twist the bare copper together and wrap some electrical tape around but will I loose quality of sound?

Any suggestions / experiences are very welcome. Many thanks

If the wires are direct into the speakers, it is probably a rather thin wire. What you might consider is to get a length of wire long enough for the entire run needed, cut the exiting wire near the speaker and solder the new wire in place. Then you can wrap it with your insulator tape, shrink wrap or WHY. Then the connection is behind the speaker where you wont see it. It is also likely that this new wire will be thicker.

I wouldn't think you need to go larger than 16ga. lampcord.
