The power supply unit has been masked off and a tidy coat of matt paint applied. It is a very tidy job.

A quick check on the web will give you your answer but if I remember they are not.
I switched from a Weller iron to a Metcal, the older version of the MX-500 and it greatly improved my soldering skills.
Good deal on both these units.

Aha, couldn't see the differences on my phone. I was mulling that the only thing better than a metcal was two. Just checked and mine is an old PS2 but cannot find out what the xref was.
I use an old PS2, all the parts on the MX should interchange including the hand piece. Using one of these is like soldering with a pen, your fingers are very close to the tip and you have much better control than the old fashioned fire sticks.

I think the new PS-800/900 is the replacement of the SP-200 so the tips are the same SSC-XXX series.
The MX-500 is all you need Bill but certainly the tips are more expensive to replace, it uses the SSTC-XXX series tips.

Just checked and my tips are indeed STTC compatible. Thank you. Need to work out if I can justify this as its a real bargain.
