Has Anyone Used F6 w/B&W 805D3?

I have an opportunity to obtain a pair of 805D3's. I was wondering if anyone had experience doing this.

My room is super-small.

My current setup is DAC->Nutube B1->Splitter
Splitter->F6->Woofer of Klipsch RP600M
Splitter->Attenuator->Aleph J->Horn of Klipsch RP600M

Some of you might recall me trying to get this setup humming. I have, and I love listening to it!

A friend of mine is recommending the D3's. I'd like to try them. I heard his 802's, and thought they were quite good.

One general thing about choosing a set of speakers, be careful with wow effect. Usually that indicates that something is really different about them, may be like clarity of highs or whatever. This is a step away from "neutrality" and may get you tired of it on a long run. Neutral speakers (if that's something you are looking for) are usually less "wow". B&W are not neutral and have their signature, make sure you listen to a lot of different material before you commit. Good luck!

I have B&W 804D speakers along with Klipsch Heresy 2's and Lowther pm2a. The 804s sound great with the b1 korg preamp and aleph j amp. When I switched to a ba2018 balanced preamp I was totally disappointed with the sound stage and depth. I swapped in the Lowthers and everything was back with the soundstage and depth.
I'm learning that some speakers sound great with some electronics and some don't. Having a selection of components allows me to mix and match to find the best sound.

I've lusted after the 802 D2 & 3 for some time now, I will not spend that kind of money for speakers now that I know what I know now.

Thanks PKI. That's a great point.

Rayma, another great point. I don't think it's possible to get a pair on loan, but have often enjoyed how the larger much 802's sound in my friend's home. If the mids are similar, I think I'd be happy.

Thanks elwood625. That's encouraging. I bet the Aleph J sounds amazing with those Lowthers. I like the Heresy, but wouldn't be able to place them properly in my small and weird (triangular) space.

The 805 D3s, according to measurements in a Stereophile review, dip under 6R from 100hz-400hz. They do so again from 9k up. They never get down to 4R.

I decided to go with the 805 D3's. They're bi-amped, with the Aleph J driving the tweeters, and the F6 driving the mid/bass; all through the Korg B1.

The bass is full with some nice punch when called for (especially considering the size of the drivers). The mids have wonderful depth, in a quite engaging way. The separation between instruments and voices is very good.

The F6 has driven everything I've asked it to, and drove these D3's well before bi-amping.

Deep thanks to Mr Pass and the diyaudio store for making such great quality accessible to anyone initiated enough to read a bit and wield a soldering iron for a few hours! I would have never experienced anything approaching this otherwise.

The Stereophile review has some nice measurements. This speaker is not neutral:

It’s got the typical “shock and awe” 10kHz bump designed to get people to feel that it is very “resolving”. Personally, I think it would grow a bit fatiguing in the long run.

The in room response (red) is not as flat as the LS3/5A (blue), or KEF LS50 (green):

That tweeter could probably use about 3.3ohms to 4.7ohms of padding. If it is bi-wired, simply adding a series resistor to the binding posts on the tweeter might help the balance.

In the end, it’s all about entertainment and if it sounds good to you, who’s to say what one should or should not like? I prefer smooth neutral response with a slight right tilt so that highs are about -5dB lower than bass is at 100Hz. It just plays all genres equally well that way and doesn’t sound fatiguing.

Hmmm interesting to look at crossovers.
Starting from 803 D4 LF crossover seems to have cheap ceramic resistor and electrolytic capacitor.

Also I noticed they start to shunt their crossovers with a small epcos pp caps between traces. Not just now but for sometime already.
Does it improve something?
