HD Video amplifiers design

8VSB doesn’t need anything too special to amplify. I'm curious though why your looking for 20 dB of gain. Multipath interference could e a much bigger issue for you if you need to boost that much.

If you boosting the signal to where the AGC in the demod is cutting back on its level then your going to be reducing SNR and making the symbols tougher to detect.

I imagine that there are a few articles floating around about building UHF amps, but unless you’ve got all the parts sitting around, I agree that even a cheapie from Radio Shack would likely do the trick.

I have most of the parts around a small box and even extra supplies. I have used a radio shack amp that a friend brought over and it worked ok. They RS claimed it had a max of 20dB, and it did not cause any problems. That’s were the 20dB number came from.

Anyway, I have one HD channel that will not come in with out it a amp and another that right on the edge the picture will freeze. The RS product I wanted is out of production and the newer versions are design to me mounted with the antenna. So it's more of a hassle to get power to the roof and just to build some simple amp. 🙂

The problem is compounded since the HD channel that I am having aproblem with is in the VHF band. I have a big antenna with lots of elements.. I think it would come in.

I can just build that little amp, that should do the trick.

Here's another link with the previous amp and one other:

These things are turning out to be tougher to find than I thought.

VHF-HD figures.

Are there any Hams around with the AARL antenna handbooks?

I seem to recall looking in the index of one that had both VHF Yagi (because I still think your having discrimination problems from mutipath) as well as some amplifier ckts.

I’ve always wanted to own these books, but I gotta draw stop putting books on the shelf that I seldom refer to.

I have a friend that a ham, he might have the handbook. Yea, if I read all the technical books I own, I would be very busy for a long time. There just too many good books, I guess that is why they call it the information age. We sure have more input than we can absorb.
