I've just completed the DAC based on the schematic from the RJM site - music has got detail and vocals sound fine but bass is very much lacking. Component values used are as specified. Tried increasing the power supply cap to 1000uf, dropped the 1543 supply voltage to 8V and still no difference. Any idea what's happening ? Appreciate the help. Thanks. Schematic link below.

Yo! Fancy seeing you here...
What are you connecting the dac to? Try posting on echoloft, and see if any of the local kaypohs can help. 😉

Hey There,
I have the same problem, I connect it to my Marantz CD4000 and the bass and the 3d image is not very good. My Sony CDP-195 is unmodify and sound much beter..... I don't know what the problem is. Please Help

A possible answer is that the passive I/V output is having problems driving the next stage (the preamp, or worse the passive attenuator). I had that issue, and it was solved by having a buffer on my gainclone, and using parallel dacs.
I get tremendous bass drive out of my DDDAC 1543...I am using the 8 parrallel chip configuration which produces plenty of drive...also...I liked the effects of reclocking with Guido Tent's reclocker.

I have the same experience, and solved it with going to active IV using opa2604. Huge improvement, especially in the bass department.
Passive I/V can also have good bass, but the choice of components is more critical. The battery improves bass substantially as well.
I can't complain that my passive I/V stage is lacking in that dept. Actually, I was commented that the bass was rather amazing. I'd say that PS is quite important for good bass performance.

I am sorry for my English....
My setup:
Marantz CD4000 Cd-Player
Cs8412-Tda1543 (all caps are marcon) Dac
Bottlehead Foreplay Pre-Amplifier
John Linsley Hood Amplifier
Vifa 2-way (D27TG+17WP) Speakers

Self Made AC Filter
Hello maartentje, Now this get's interesting! What kind of coil or AC filter did you manage to make?
Are you familiar with the Jon Risch filter?

You have thus learnt a valuable lesson - a mains filter usually does more harm than good.
Very strange, I changed the 4.7uF output caps, initially polyester now non-polar electrolytic, and the bass is back ! Both caps have equivalent capacitance. Unless the polyester labelling is wrong.
I had a similar issue with a cathode bypass cap in my tube amp - two identical capacitors but otherwise sounding significantly different. The only difference was that one cap was rated 85C and the other for 105C (the part numbers were different as well). One cap actually sounded thin in comparison to the other.
Do caps have other parameters that affect sound ?
Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

Hi Maarten, You did not use a current compensated coil or a ready made filter by Corcom or Schaffner for example?
😕
