Hello Ladies and gents,
I have been looking for a reasonably priced ($150 to $200) car dvd audio player. I want it to play burned DVDs full of uncompressed audio files in the same format that one would find on a commercial cd. As far as I can tell a 4.7 gB dvd could hold about about 8 hours worth of music which would alleviate the need for a changer mechanism(and thus the reliability issues.
So far I have not been able to find such a model. I therefore would like to hear from anyone who has attempted to make such a unit using a dvd player designed for pc use and a custom PIC based controller. The output would then be fed into the preamp of the in-dash unit. Anyone heard of or tried to create such a system?
Thanks,
Bob

Well, the largest obstacle would be what kind of output you are deriving from that player. IDE drivers aren't the easiest thing... The d/a part of it would be very complicated if you were to pull off of the digital out of the DVD player.
Instead of reinventing the wheel, why not try an inverter + 50$ best buy DVD player that would play any format? 75$ and you'd have a reasonably small player, I'm thinking of one specifically with a credit card remote, and would play any format you throw at it under the sun + digital optical/rca... and is reasonably small, no larger than a standard outboard Hard drive USB type device...

You ever tried to listen to something being powered by a square wave invertor? Doesn't sound good to put it mildly.

is where I have gotten al my car audio and video...
there will always be some place where you can get things cheaper, faster and better ....... meanwhile.

Ok, don't use an AC invertor, build yourself a DC-DC converter instead... All those cheap bestbuy DVD players are, is a little computer based on +5v and +12v circuitry with a DVD-Rom drive in them. There's no need for real ac power in there, it just has a rectifier and cap inside anyways.
Problem solved 😉

Thank You all for your responses. I think Ocelaris has an interesting idea. The remaining questions/comments are:
1. Is there a particular model DVD player that you have in mind, and if so would you post it?
2. What are the differences in abilities to withstand shock between car dvd players vs home players vs pc based players? To what length if any would I have to provide shock insulation for a home based player being used in a car? Would the media get damaged bouncing around in the players tray?
3. Would such a unit be mountable in the trunk? I assume it would be in a horizontal position and one might want to run a IR line so the remote you talked about would work.
4. I have a trunk mounted amp in my 97 town car so it would be a short run to hook up the dvd output to it! What might be a true gas is if i could use the cd ontrols on my oem head unit to control the dvd player, a bit of electronics homebrew for that.
5. I have to look into the posting that had the link to players from Innovatech. I haven't heard much about them.
6. What would really be nice .... LISTEN UP SONY, PIONEER, ALPINE, KENWOOD, ET AL, would be to have an in-dash player capable of doing burned audio DVD at a reasonable price (say $125 to $250). Dvd recorders are becoming common place on home computers and alot of people already burn cds for their car or compress their tunes to put on their iPods. Its not too difficult to imagine people drag/drop/burn a 8 hour DVD of their favorite music. Imagine never having to change a disc for while listening to a full 8 hours of your best tunes! If they want to build mp3 capability into such a player then you could drive from coast to coast without changing the disc! I prefer uncompressed music myself.
Thanks,
Bob

Your first post makes it sound like you are concerned with reliability. I would worry more about the reliability issues of putting a $50 home DVD player in a car compared to running a CD changer built for the purpose. I've had one CD changer in my car since 1994 and never had an issue.
The problem with a DVD full of Audio is that it's rather impossible to navigate with the control system setup unless you have a monitor...
I don't have a specific device in mind, but I would try buy and return if it doesn't work.
As for vibration the trunk mounted CD changers I have taken apart have little gel like pads isolating them from vibrations. If you want to go all out for this device, get some of those squishy mouse pads and mount the DVD player on them.
IR eye (repeater) is easy, just buy a repeater and stick a flasher on the front of the DVD player. you will have to run a Cat5 or similar between front and back.
The Alpine 9965 MAY play uncompressed DVD burned CDA audio, but I am not sure...
Another option, instead of doing DVD uncompressed audio, is buy a hard drive based player that can do FLAC or uncompressed audio. I beg people to hear a difference between a lossless codec and uncompressed...
Don't use Ipod, they're a menace to technology... Use an IRiver (IMO) a better device. You can run FLAC on their aftermarket software, and the H120 devices have an optical output if you want to break any analog barriers, but then you would need a d/a converter...
