How to test pream outputs

Hi,
I would like to know how to hook up a multimeter to a car stereo to check out the preamp/speaker out. Why?
Problem: rear speakers are not working, front are fine:

Tests so far:
1) I have checked continuity from the stereo to the amp. No resistance
1a) from the amp to the rear speakers. No resistance
2) Hooked up alternate speakers Nothing
3) Replaced the Amp with two others...Nothing

This is a stock radio CD player from a 2001 Chrysler Sebring LXI Sedan. There is a small amp under the passenger seat.

The stereo is out, the amp is exposed. I can check the speaker out by disconnecting the amp and testing the wires there.

All I need to know is the correct test to do with the multimeter... if possible. (perhaps I should just chop an old pair of headphones and use that?

Thanks,
Kevin 😛

Use a multimeter and point the selector in AC. Play the headunit at high volume and observe the reading, bass music has a large fluctuation in reading. If not satisfied cut your headphone wires...

Tested

Hi,
Well, I have tried quite a few things to diagnose why the rear speakers in my car are not playing

1) Tested for continuity for the wiring harness from the amp to the head unit output and from the amp to the back speakers. All had great continuity
2) Tried two other amps
3) Tried another stereo
4) Tried a home speaker instead of the ones in the car.

I have hooked up the speaker to the wiring harness from the stereo and there is a low signal coming from the L/R rear speaker out before it gets to the amp.

I have noticed that when I turn the volume way up with the fader set to rear... I still hear some small sound from the small front speakers.

I have hooked the home speaker to the output from the amp with the wiring harness plugged in, and there is not really much sound coming from the speaker.

I suppose the next step is to see if there are any shorts by cross checking the wiring harness starting with the rear speakers.

All six speakers go through this small amp under the passenger seat. 4 in front, two in back.

I wonder if there is a separate amp on wire for the back speakers.

The car is a 2001 Chrysler Sebring LXI sedan. The stereo is an average CD player with an amp under the seat, two speakers in the dash, two in the doors and two in the back.

If you have read this far, you have a pretty good attention span, thanks.
I welcome any suggestions for testing. This car is not getting a new stereo.
Thanks,
Kevin :mischiev:

Hi kevin,

Okay, what happens if you connect your HU's front L & R channels to the rear speakers, any sound? If yes: there is a problem w/the rear channel of the HU. If no: There may be a problem w/the rear speaker wires or the speakers themselves; based on the fact that the front channel does work through the front speakers.

Using a multi-meter: Set the meter to AC volts on the low scale; 0 to 200. Connect the red meter probe to the rear channel (L or R), center contact on the RCA cable. Now connect the black meter probe to the outer ring (or crown) of the same RCA cable. Turn on the radio or CD player and advance the volume about half way. "Be sure that the fader (front to rear speaker control) is set in the middle, and the L & R bal control is centered as well". You should be able to see a fluctuating read-out on the meter display of around 2 volts (maybe more, maybe less); it doesn't really matter, we're only looking for an output to determine if the HU has an output.

Let us know what these tests reveal. Best to you!

Hi,
Embarrassed. The speakers in my car were blown. The home speaker I used to test the outputs were blown. The junk yard speaker I used to test them again was blown. Going to get some more speakers and test them....then install.

(Laughing...) Wow, what are the chances of that... "that's a perfect score"! Do you play the lottery?? hahaha!

Cheers!
