I'm looking at options for a fully active DIY full-size speaker, presumably a 3-way system. Considering how good/cheap 2-way studio monitors are now, does it make more sense to buy JBL LSR308 (or Genelec, Neumann, etc.) active monitors and build a subwoofer to serve as a speaker stand?
This would be the setup implemented by NOAudiophile in his review of the LSR308s. See: JBL LSR308 Review
**I prefer an active system because 1.) Rod Elliott convinced me it is superior 2.) My personal experience confirms active > passive and 3.) I like the flexibility of an active system.

You may not need a sub with the lsr308. I have Mackie HR824 which have an 8” woofer and in my 10’ x 10’ room the bass is plenty getting down into the low 30’s.
That's exactly the way I use my LSR305 speakers now. I have a pair of bass modules each having two 8" woofers. I have been using them for 20 years as the foundation (for both providing low bass and serving as stands) for trying out various small speakers, some bought and some home-grown. I like the idea of releasing small two-way speakers or speakers using full-range drivers of the low-bass duty.
