Hypex DS2.0 2 ohm

The DS2.0 subwoofer plate amp seems to be based on the UcD180. The UcD180 datasheet states 1 ohm minimum load. I believe it is safe to use at 2 ohms, if 2 ohms is really the lowest they go for your frequency range.

So you should look at the impedance graph of your drivers in the frequency range that you will be using. They might have low impedance dips that would bring the impedance of the parallel woofers lower than 2ohms at some frequencies.

If that's the case then you might want to consider a DS4.0 (based on UcD400) and wire the woofers in series instead of in parallel. Or use a DS2.0 plate amp for each woofer.

If you have an impedance lower than 2ohms lowering the power supply DC voltage as mentionned by Tekko cannot be done since these plate amps are AC powered and have their own power supplies. If you went the full DIY way you could use one UcD180 with lower voltage or two UcD180 or one UcD400. The power supply is not hard to do and you can find good electronic crossovers such as the xm9 at marchandelec.com (need a pre-amp separate from your power amps).

One more tought: even though 2 ohms operation is safe for the amp it might not give a satisfying result. At 2 ohms neither the DS2.0 nor the DS4.0 will be capable of generating enough current to deliver their full power rating but the DS4.0 will give you more current and thus more power. It might sound good or it might not. If you want a minimum of 200 watts a DS4.0 gives you the ability to try parallel or series and see which one is better. If 100 watts are acceptable then you can do the same experiments with the DS2.0 (you get 100 watts in series but not much more in parallel since you are current limited).

So to summarize: it is safe to experiment with 2 ohms and the DS2.0 but you will probably get only half the 4 ohms power rating and you will have no reserve of current so I am guessing that the dynamics might be compressed if you use it loud. For predictable good results use two DS2.0 or one DS4.0 or DS2.0 with the woofer in series. If you want to stick with a single DS2.0 then one 4 ohm woofer or two 8 ohm woofers would give you 180 watts.

Since using two 4 ohms woofers gives you half the power than using a single 4 ohm woofer: don't use the second woofer (or maybe as a passive woofer, not sure if that adds distorsion). If a single woofer is not capable of delivering 180watts then use two woofers in series for a total of 100 watts.

My first post! 🙂

I have tried 2 ohms load on the Hypex DS 4.0 with a TCSounds 12" TC2+ DVC 4 ohms driver. No control at all, so i guess the DS 2.0 will have trouble with 2 ohms also.

With the voicecoils in series (8 ohms) there is no problems at all. Thight and powerfull bass.

But it is not clipping when using 8 ohm right? Is it loud enough at 8 ohms?

We cannot draw any conclusion on the DS4.0 at 2 ohms since that is outside of its normal operating range.

The reason I am interested is I will build a pair of 8 ohms Linkwitz Thor subwoofers in the fall and am planning to use a stereo +/- 80V per rail Tripath amp that I have the parts for. I could try them in parallel to see if one channel in parallel is better than two separate channels at 8ohms each.

I could also try the Tripath amp in bridged mode (would give close to 1000W per amp into each driver - not sure if I will try that as it needs an inverting op-amp and also I don't want to burn the driver) and use two amps instead of one (I have the parts for three). And I will also try the two Hypex UcD400 that I will normally be using on my Orion woofers.

I have not manged to get it to "clip" with 8 ohms load (yet). 🙂

I am using the hypex ds 4.0 / tc2+ as a "subcenter". Works like a charm for that purpose. As an "ordinary sub" it also plays OK, actually goes deeper than the front speakers. SPL not impressing, but that of course has nothing to do with the amp. 200 w should do the job for most 10"/12" drivers. As long as the driver aren't 2x4 ohms i parallell.

It's not many d-class amp that manage 2 ohms load without suffering. The B&W Ice power modules is rated to do so, but a guy on a norwegian av forum tested the 1000asp module with a 4 ohms load (pair of CV! CLSC-215). At high volume (insane for most people I guess) clipping occured after a short time. Then imagine 2 ohms load.....
