Ipod EU volume lock..

Hi,

I thought I would share this experiment..I take no responsibilty if you try this..and YMMV

I have an Ipod nano bought in the EU England..It has the volume lock that is not I believe on the US model..So here is the history.

I tried making the hidden files available and mounting the Ipod then accessing the Ipod device folder then trying to reprogram the settings file in Wordpad which worked untill you disconnect the Ipod the the firmware seems to rewrite the file...No joy their...even go pod was a no go! And no file to delete for volume settings..so no joy their either.

So next step was trawl the internet, I came across this post (post #3) in this thread.

And I did not follow exactly what was suggested..This is what I did..

I down loaded itunes from the US site..it askes for country and UK was auto selected so I selected "other". I down loaded the US itunes it said would i like to update or remove so I deleted Itunes UK and rebooted the PC. Then downloaded again and installed US itunes. I connected the I pod and let it sink..I then unplugged the ipod Nano reset the Ipod settings that does not delete your music ect.
I set the language to en-US.

Then I had an Ipod that seemed to be set to US spec. And was not set for zone 2 for the Radio..so had to set for europe.
The time zone now in the US was reset to london UK..

and all other settings were reset to my normal settings lang to En-UK.

Its interesting because the volume limit is gone (even though I can set the max volume preset) and I have to turn it down. YMMV

Well done! I don't have one, but if I did I'd want to unlock it purely on principal, because I don't like the idea of some government idiot deciding what my max SPL should be.

What's next - a ban on the sale of audio amps over 100W and speakers over 90dB sensitivity to the general public?

well, to be fair, if you are using it past the volume limit using the supplied ibuds, even though it doesnt sound like it due to the horrendous leakage, you are damaging your ears. the leakage is so bad on the stock in ears that anywhere in public or on transport you will turn it up to get over the bleed through, it is actually MUCH louder than it sounds because of this.

so I actually think for people using stock buds its a good thing and it was a responsible reaction from the company. if you want louder sound, nothing wrong with that, but just get yourself some properly sealing headphones or in ears, or use the LOD to a portable amp, the LOD bypasses the volume. if you have decent seal you need to use far less volume, most people turn it up to get the bass and the nature of the stock buds means they seal terribly, so bass just isnt going to happen even when cranking it.
