Completely in the dark here, what might it be called? I don't want a computer, just a portable type player that plugs into the wall, with an interface to scroll the filesystem and some RCA outs. Many thanks!
I think what you want is a media player. These are common in the DJ world but the only product of that type I can think of that is the least complicated is the Tascam CD-400u.
If you want a small handheld device with an SD slot then pickup a portable music player, it will take a micro SD card and you will need a 1/8 to RCA cable to interface with an audio system.

Yes, a multimedia player like this perhaps: DENON DN-F350 MEDIA PLAYER SD/USB/Bluetooth, WAV, MP3, balanced XLR/unbalanced RCA out, 1U
Plugs into the wall, but not portable in the sense you can go walkies with it!

Stereo or mono MP3 or WAV audio files can be played from a removable SD or SDHC card or from external USB media.
I think there have been simple mp3 players with wav support. But MP3-players are a bit outdated meanwhile.
Yes, I have one but I'm thinking it would be nice to have something with a little more output and headroom, that type of thing. Something a little more permanent, without all the wires. 🙂
Home receivers have had usb thumb drive inputs for a few years now. I just got a used Marantz from a relative that they were going to donate.
Cheap and good are some of the tpa3116 boards that have flash memory reading capability.
Another option is to use a digital music player and an amplifier, am doing that in my car soon.

"That's right, you'll need to leave a server of some kind on to use the Squeezebox if you want to use your own music."

I'm assuming that means just for music on a computer, not the usb/sd. I'll investigate.

Have You considered a Rapsberry PI solution ? Many software available. Including remote control apps. Volumio, Moode, Logitech Media Server etc.
I'm using Logitech Media Server on an RPI4 connected wirelessly to my 4TB music NAS.

I confess I have not, I appreciate the suggestion but I'm just trying to play music off an sd card. The last thing I want is software 🙂 Thank you though!
Something like this might suit - at least its pretty cheap : 2.8??MP5?? ??5.0????APE/FLAC/WAV?????????-???

The touch can do standalone music without a server - via USB or SD.
See the attached snapshot from manual.

Have you considered this, combined with a NAS? Get them on Ebay or Marktplaats for next to nothing.

Network Music Player NP1100/12 | Philips Have you considered this?
These are all such great ideas/ I knew these types of solutions were out there, I just didn't know where. I really appreciate the help. Thank you all so very much! 🙂
There are tiny music players like the Sansa Clip+ (obsolete) and the Clip Sport which will play lossless flac files off a micro SD card. Some car head units play flac from USB drives; I've never tried one, so can't comment on how well they do that.
You may find something worthwhile being sold as a high-res music player. I tried searching Aliexpress for 24/96 audio player and found this; SMSL DP1 Digital Player USB SD Card 32bit Audio DAC with Built in Headphone Amplifier High Resolution Music Player|Digital-to-Analog Converter| - AliExpress

The cheap little Sony blu ray players BDPS1700 will do it through a USB adapter. These play just about every other known audio format. They cost only 60 bucks.
