Hey!
I have some questions about the JBL 4412 and I can't find answers from googling.
I have the option to buy a pair of JBL 4412 (not the 4412A) for 6000SEK which is around $640. They have the original covers and are supposed to be in good working condition. They are located in my hometown so checking them out IRL and having a listen to them before buying is no problem.
Is that a fair price for these speakers or should I negotiate a lower price? I can't find much price info when googling.
Also, are there any modifications that should be done to these? Thinking about the crossovers. I know Troels has a new crossover design for the L100 but what about the 4412?
I've always wanted to own a set of vintage JBL speakers and I'm thinking this might be a good opportunity.

Can't really say on price but you might want to search closed E-Bay auctions. The 4412 is a completely different speaker system compared to the L100. The 4412 was a real monitor and did not share the tailored response of the L100.
I would leave the crossovers as is. I would also take a good look at the woofers to see what the foam condition is. It tends to deteriorate over time. I doubt they still have their original foam. Foam surrounds should be glued to the back.

In Denmark 6000sek would be the price when owner puts a premium for brand and fame. Can also be found for 2500sek from someone who wants to clean out. Less if foam is aged
Changing the foam should not be a problem.
I've done it twice already in my 14-inch JBl, and I can assure you that the hypothetical difference in compliance is not audible to ordinary mortals.
If you read Troels, take into account his recommendation to apply liquid silicone on foam wings, I have done it and it prolongs the life of the foam for many years.

I started doing that over 25 years ago, hadn’t heard of anyone else smooshing silicone into brittle foam surrounds. The ones I have done that to are still working btw.
Still wondering what the best capacitor would be for the titanium dome tweeters used in these speakers.
Anyone with experience?
So far I have limited mine (clones) to using some polyester with polystyrene bypasses that should be similar to what the original crossovers would have been.

I had a pair in the early 2000's. The mid and tweeter were quite good. Bass was like expected from these old JBL's, not deep, but lots of midbass. Good midbass I should add.
I also had the foam of the woofers give up on me. I think I paid 3000SEK for them and sold them for 2000SEK in desperate need of refoaming. Had them for 3-4 years.
I bought the speakers to try the sound they were famous for. Happy I did it.
Today I would spend 6000SEK on a couple of Canton RCL or similar, not 4412's...

I think the foam surrounds are in good shape on the 4412. The same seller also has a set of L100 Century for sale but he says they are in worse shape overall with deteriorated foam and some sort of damage on one of the tweeters. He is asking the same price (6000SEK) for the L100 Century in that condition.
It is the seller's father that had them but he recently passed away so now he is selling off his father's collection of audio stuff.
I will ask him if I can come have a closer look at the 4412 and see in how good condition they are. Would ~4500-5000 be a more reasonable price or what do you think? Or should I try to go even lower?

L100 woofers never had foam surrounds. They were all treated pleated cloth. The only foam were the pads around the tweeter.
Rob 🙂

Alright, I guess that's the foam he is referring to then.
Maybe it refers to the foam of the front grille ....😉
The L100 carries the Le26 tweeter, with a paper cone like Le20 and Le25.
If they tell you that it is broken but can be repaired, forget it, it will never sound like the original.
I say this for a sad experience with the Le20
