I have 2 KEF Reference Uni-Q 6.5" drivers on hand and am looking for an enclosure and setup options for them. I would use them on my desk as near field speakers or possibly on stands in a living room area. These are the same drivers used through the entire KEF Reference series from the Reference 201 bookshelf up to the flagship model 207.

KEF 203:
Here are the specs including crossover points.
Drive Unit Array :
2 x 165mm (6.5in.) LF
1 x 165mm (6.5in.) Uni-Q MF
including a 25mm (1in.) titanium HF
Frequency Response :
(@ 15° horizontally off axis ± 3dB)
50Hz - 60kHz
Crossover Frequencies :
300Hz, 2.3kHz
Amplifier Requirements :
50 - 200W
Sensitivity :
(2.83V / 1m)
89dB
Maximum Output :
113dB
Impedance :
8Ω (3.2Ω min)
Bass Extension :
40Hz (-6dB)
I guess I have 2 main questions:
1 - Is this speaker feasible as a "full range" single driver speaker? I don't know a lot about crossovers but it looks like it might be a 300Hz + speaker and not suitable to get down into the lower Hz as a full range.
2 - If this speaker will work on it's own, what kind of box would you recommend?
Here are a couple of options I was considering:

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Email KEF and ask them for the drivers TS details - or phone them, they are usually very helpful.
Both will depend on its [preferably measured] T/S specs, though with a 300 Hz XO I'm guessing its Fs will be too high to go low even in the nearfield at low enough distortion.

Hi,
Short answer to 1 and 2 is no, it does not seem
to have a surround suitable for bass, in any sense.
A good a guess any is similar to the B&W FST
measured on this page : zaph|audio
scroll down to june, 2011
rgds, sreten.
Also note that rear loaded horn gets progressively
more ludicrous the wider it is made without changing
any of the other dimensions, just very bad design.

I thought the same thing about it not having much of a surround. At first I was thinking that since the KEF LS50 is a single Uni-Q that it might be doable, but that's a different design and it does have a surround.
I guess I could do a cabinet with a woofer or two and this uni-q driver, but then I'd be dealing with a crossover.
