Lepai 838 mods?

Hey guys, newbie to the forum here.
🙂

I've been playing with the Lepai 2020 amps for a while with good results.
Recently bought a bunch of 838 amps for various projects.

Been trying to find any info on them online but not having much luck.
Would love to hear from anyone who's had a go at them and especially about the SUPER BASS output..?

It seems near impossible to use it past 1/4 volume with any bass driver I've tried...
😕

The stereo outputs work fine with most 3-way speakers, but it would be nice to make use of the SUPER BASS (cracks me up every time) as well.
😛

Yeah they're definitely different from the 2020!

One of mine had red and yellow RCA inputs at the back.
Took the cover off and it was a 3-socket input which had been cut down to 2 with a bread knife by the looks of things 😀

The only real problem I see with them is the bass control (or lack thereof)
Must be a way to dampen it a bit, maybe with a resistor or something...?

Probably seems like a waste of time to many people but I like doing little things like that and having a go at improving things, even if the gain is minimal.

🙂

Personal experiences convinced me that Lepai 2020 are ..Garbage.
.

I've made good use of the 2020 amps.
Just don't expect too much for $20-25 and you'll do ok.

A few people on this forum seem to have made some improvements to them as well.

Anyway, not talking about the 2020 here.

Was hoping someone would have some input other than "It's a cheap crap amp".... which I already know.

🙄

Nobody tinkering with this amp then?
🙂
Hi DV,

I would'n call it tinkering, but I added a 47K resistor in series to the 50K potentiometer in an attempt to widen the 1/4 pathway.

It's a small improvement, I still need to try higher values to see if that gives me a wider range (470K proved too high, the output of the superbass couldn't keep up with the stereo output).

There's room on the bottom of the circuitboard to cut the copper trace in the max volume side and solder the resistor to the trace and the solder pad of the pot.

Hi DV,

I'll see if I find the time to open the amp this week and take a picture for you.

My first try was a 470K resistor, which was too much, even with the volume at 100%, the bass output wasn't loud enough to keep up with the stereo channels.

As I didn't have all values available, I went to the other end of the spectrum and swapped the 470K for a 47K resistor.

This works marginally better, I need to experiment with higher values to see if I can get finer control over the bass channel output.

The resistor doesn't link the bass output to the main volume, they seem to be seperate amps; if you turn the main volume all the way down, you still can play the bass channel; something that strikes me as odd...

I set the balance between the main and the bass channel and regulate the overall volume with the output of my MP3 player, or CD player.

Regards, Jan.

Ah I see ok so you're "softening" the bass output?
I had a feeling there was a way to do this.

Yes it is a bit odd that the bass control is separate from main volume.
Guess it was easier/cheaper to do it that way maybe?

Pics would be great, whenever you get a chance, much appreciated.

Thanks.
