I built a light bulb limiter exactly like the one in this diagram;
When I plug in a known working solid state amp into the device and switch it on, the light bulb stays lit and the amp just hums. The amp works fine plugged in normally.
What did I get wrong on this? I snipped the tab on the left side of the outlet and left the one on the right side as per the illustration.

You need an old fashioned incandescent lamp about 100 Watts. Modern fluorescent or LED lamps won't do.
The bulb must be incandescent, and not LED or flourescent. Depending on the UUT, the proper bulb could be anywhere from 60W to 150W.
You need a incandescent lamp at least 1.5 times higher than the idle power of the amplifier. For example, the amplifier draws 100 watts @ idle, you need a 150 watts bulb.
BTW, you can parallel a few bulbs to get the desired wattage.

Ah okay thanks, the amp I test with might actually draw higher current at idle than I thought. It's supposedly a 100 watt (output) amp.
Wanted to test this before plugging in an amp under repairs. Maybe gonna need a bigger bulb.
EDIT: Now works as intended with a big high wattage bulb. Thanks all.
