Linn Intek Input Too Sensitive

Hi,

I have a Linn Intek and I was wondering if it was possible to lower the input sensitivity on Tuner and CD?

It works fine with my turn-table with K9 cartridge, but with a Alpha 7 CD player and Teac DAB tuner I only need to turn the volume a tiny amount so there is really very little volume control.

Many thanks

True 🙂

You do not have a "too sensitive" preamp, but "too loud" sound sources, and the way to match them is, as suggested above, introduce some attenuation.

Wouldn´t be surprised at your sound sources being able to put out some 2V RMS (very common these days) while your preamp sensitivity is probably some 100/200mV RMS, so a in principle a 10:1 attenuator would be a good starting point.
Say, 22k:2k2 should work.

39 Pounds each for RCA compatible attenuators seems a bit much for what is effectively 2 resistors forming an L-pad, housed in an RCA plug/socket combo.

DIY it! Calculate your own, based on the characteristic impedance of the amplifier input terminals and use the appropriate value 0.25 W metal film resistors for either 10 or 20 dB attenuation from the E12 or E24 series resistor values mounted inside a normal, shielded RCA lead plug. 10k, 25k, 47k are typical shunt resistor values and you can calculate the series resistor for 10, 20 etc. dB from that. Accuracy isn't as important as matching here.

I know this issue. Main reason is a too high voltage gain factor of the line preamp. Refer the schematics in #44 (page 5) under
Linn Intek Schematic required
Between the source select rotary switch/volume attenuator and the power amp section are located a line preamp (gain stage) section using NE5534.
Best solution is the remove of this operational amplifier and using only a bypass wire. So you have create a passive preamp section without any trouble - gain factor of power amp is enough. I have make this several times and all users are very happy with this step.

In the course of this modification, the coupling capacitors in the signal pad could be replaced by foil versions for additional enhancing sonic performance.
