After reading the datasheet and pricing,is this 5-pins TO220 just a waste of money???

As what I know, LM675 is considerably OLDER National power chip amp.

Why the price is higher ...
When it comes to IC or Computer CPU chips, and whatever
the price is not always a good indicator of better quality.

Each chip has got its own development costs.
When still a chip is not sold in such many exemplars, it has not paid its costs
the price is NOT dumped.
When first introduced, they can even be quite expensive,
to make sure, even if not sold very many, a great deal of the chip development
will be compensated for.

Some chips, like LM1875, LM3875 and for example LM317 Voltage regulator
become rapidly very popular.
So they quickly paid there cost of development and the designers works.

And when this period of ensuring covering of cost is done,
then rest will be more or less pure profit.
So then, without taking any risks at all, they can dump the price quite a bit
and so try to get very large volume of production (at low cost in Taiwan) and many pieces sold
and so offering LOWER PRICE than competitors products and gaining market shares.

I would say even if LM675 is not at all a bad Chip
LM3875 and LM3886 is at a higher level even at a lower price.

If the technical chip designers of National has got any capacity of learning.
