Hi all,
I am a professor at a college here in Ontario. I need a new podium/lectern for my classroom. I've been looking at the av podiums on AV Podiums and Lecterns for Audio/Visual Presentations | AVFI but they are a little pricey.
Anybody know where I can get podiums with similar features (electronic inputs for PA systems etc.) at a cheaper price?
Thanks.

I'm sure a carpenter would built it from a picture.
Try to get quotations from some woodworking / furniture stores.
The inputs are just XLRs' or jacks attached to the podium. The ones You put on PA racks. I own a Samson condenser mic which came with a piece for attaching to a podium. Nothing complicated, unless the amp / speaker is also built in.
I would also insulate it from the floor by using some rubber feet to prevent thumps and floor feedback. I have some experience from election candidate installations, where You hear the stage people shoes on the speakers.
If it's a fixed installation I would use cable for the mic, or You can go the wireless route.

Suggest you call these guys and discuss your needs. They also give educational discounts.
I would avoid wireless as being too trouble-prone.

Ironically, wireless was going to be my first suggestion. Don't get a cheapo unit though. With good quality professional wireless, I have never had a problem.
And as to wire mics, as MAACO said, the jacks on a podium are just pass-through wired to the nearest PA connection. Most venues will have outlets to the PA system on nearby walls or in floor pockets on stage.
