Looking for a Fostex BK-16 kit with the older drivers

Good afternoon. Am looking for a older pair of the BK-16 kit with the white FF165 drivers used in them? If tweeters come with them it’s a bonus and if not no worries. Please PM me or e mail me. Thanks Jeff

Going back in time Jeff?

I have modded a number of those drivers (mostly in Abbeys) but those that got modded FF165wk seemed happier.

The BK16 is a horn from the days of guessing instead of modeling them. The BK12m is a modern horn added to the range in comparisone, it is still not best of class.

Ya Dave I guess I was going back in time. Well if there is a better cabinet options then am all for it. I just remember hearing them at a diy audio show years back. It had a very nice balanced sound with the Fostex 90A tweeters with a single cap on the tweeter around 8k. I could build the abbey’s (RIP) Cain & Cain. Do you have the plans for the Abby’s. Is there as way you could design a updated version of the Abbeys for me? I will pay for your Time and design. Please let me know? Thanks Dave. Jeff

I have a pair of FF165k that I’m not using and most probably won’t get to building a proper enclosure for any time soon.

I bought them used from another DIYAudio member.

They have been modified with aluminum dust caps replaced with wooden phase pIugs. They are in nice condition

I think the seller gave me some kind of measurement data with them…not sure I can locate it.

Only thing I ever did with them was to try them on some open baffles I was rotating drivers through to see what would happen.

Needless to say, it wasn’t a good application.

My understanding was that back in the day the BiB enclosure approach was what was popular for these. I even found a soreadsheet which calculated BiB enclosures on a member’s blog…I think it was Godzilla?

I have T90A, but would want to hold onto them for other speakers I want to experiment with.

If you have any interest in the FF165k let me know through PM.

Hi Jeff

As I mentioned, the open baffle was not a good match for the ff165k in my opinion. I think this driver needs an enclosure…preferably a horn/TL…to shine

The midrange was lovely…the high frequency rolled off for obvious reasons of the dust cap modification. I never got around to hooking up the t90a that’s needed with it.

The woofer is an Acoustic Elegance Dipole 15. I currently drive them with hypex amps.

The amount of bass produced on these small baffles is astonishing. I think part of the problem was that the bass was so prominent and I couldn’t get the 165 to pick up where they left off.

I use a First Watt B5 that is limited to a maximum cross frequency of 300 Hz. There is no way to boost the low end of the full range driver, only the bass driver.

Hey Jeff

Sweet!…glad it worked out! Those really looked nice to me.

I’m jealous…I’ve wanted to try building one of Dave’s/Scottmoose’s backhorn designs for a while…the FHXL is up there on the list.

I still have a pair of 206e that I fantasized about having Sachikos for.

They’ve picked up a little mildew dotting at this point from storage in my basement closet. I suppose I could do a clean up with something and do an enable or Modge Podge coating on them.

I’ve just gotten so side-tracked with “easier to build” OB and front horn solutions that I’ve come up with.

Since you bought those my hoarding is still justified. Some day I’ll get around to building a backhorn…hope still exists.

Ya. I have a lot of projects that has taken a back seat over the years. I’m at a point we’re I need of do a speaker pair at a time. This means for me 1 pair of speakers at a time.😵‍💫. I am buying some finished sets of speakers for my rooms in my house so I can focus on building more? Jeff
