looking for help to clone Acoustic Research AR-3

If a built clone was successfully done A kit might be the best option for this little experienced speaker builder. Most of my experience leans toward the cabinet making side, rather than the electronic side.

Plans for an AR3 would be awesome, if they exist out there in someone's folder.

Pictures don't hurt much either. I'm down to see some beautiful sealed cabinet working examples.

Pictured are AR-11. I'm interested in either speaker's, 3's and 11's....

https://www.madagascarsound.com.au/2018/ar-3/ The price back then for new ones was nice, $216.00 with your option of wood veneers to choose from, mahogany or birch 🙂.

I was hoping a complete kit was available somewhere, that only requires the building part 😉.

Something like was done with Dynaco A25 clone kit https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.c...6-10-2-way-kit-pair-based-on-the-classic-a25/

I'm after a certain sound, although I like them, vented speakers don't make the cut.

A sealed cabinet in kit form that would mimic either of these would make me happy. Or from a sealed model I am not aware of yet. I'm relatively new to speaker building.

The idea of those seems great. And I don't see any holes https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/dynaco-50-speakers-excellent-111029156

Is there any particular reason you do not want to buy a used pair in decent condition? I just restored a set of AR3A woofers, so the pair of complete 3A s is ready to go again......

I would like to capitalize on some of the technological advances that come up through R&D, and trial and error. That and I like the thought of having brand new speakers. And when perfect is perfected. Depending on what the model is. Some designs stand the tests of time. But can still benefit from mechanical advances in other areas, such as surround material, and so forth. I could go on with personal reasons why I like the idea of DIY'ing a new pair of speakers.

I like the thought of building good sounding speakers, and finishing them to suit my own visions.

I would like a sealed 2.5 or 3 litre, two or three way, Dynaudio drivers, 8" or 10", with metal domes perhaps?

I don't require or need an exacting specific model from yesterday. Just something that work's well and looks nice, and its sealed.

I don't expect it to compete with ultra low heavily eq'ed heavy Hz bass. But firm tight speedy bass, in some 35 - 40 hz region.

I found A25's FS, in pretty overall nice condition. Except for the size of the cabinet its not at all what I'm seeking anymore.

These intrigue me more. These are a Mark Levinson line from yesteryear. It may have a complex crossover design, and not be a good project for me. But they have eye appeal in bunches, and they are sealed.

It is not hard to do a decent 10-12"/25-30cm woofer, 2/3" 50/75mm dome mid and 1-1,1"/25-28mm dome trio.

That said, you will have some problems finding a really low Fo/mid mass/ very Cms/high Vas woofer.

The Cello thing in the picture does not look too complicated. A Dynaudio woofer, however, is no-go in my book, for the following reason: its linear excursion capabilties in mm/$ or mm/Euro (how' s that for a new unit?) must be the worst in the industry. Is that mid a TangBand job?

There is drivers meeting specs for a sealed (single coil operation ) as well as a vented (twin coil operation) cabinet. A good example is Visaton GF200 with 2x4 ohm vc.

Another driver supposed to work well in a sealed cabinet is Morel Caw 938, unfortunately Morel didn't publish a classic 3 way kit.

You seem to have a liking for middle of the road sensitivity (86dB/W/M) en ditto stroke (4,25mm Xlin) woofers...

I wasn't being very particular. I've only done active, these are out of my rhelm of experience, ie new to me. Are the Morel's a bad choice? All of my amps put out decent power, more than enough. My 2-way stand mounts are 87 db for the sensitivity spec. They aren't a challenge to power, not at all.

I like the Morel's that you guys linked, and from what I gathered a pair would be a good sealed choice.

How about a a 3 way using this midrange Morel EM 1308 2-1/8" Dome Midrange

And this HF https://www.parts-express.com/Morel-ET-338-1-1-8-Soft-Dome-Tweeter-Matched-Pair-277-070

All six speakers come in at under a thousand dollars. Which doesn't seem like a lot for a speaker I might want, and really like.

I paid over 1500 for pre made factory speakers, those being vented. Not exactly what I want.

A high power handling sealed 3 way sounds great to me. I think I might love some. Considering I can get my plywood and other hardware for $200 bucks. I think I could get some built for $1200, which seems very inexpensive. Mind you I will still need a passive crossover network for each box.
I'm still shopping around. But those Morel's deserve to be noted.

I have heard Morel, in vented Tetra's. I didn't turn ani vented speaker. I simply want something different yet still fun.

If I could replicate the look of the Piano Mark Levinson's, with the Morel setup inside, I could live with that for a long time to come if I nail the sound properly. SQ always comes first. But I have to say I'm really googoo over the simplistic tidy look of them.

Morel is one of the best shots if you desire a good working sealed cabinet design. Recently I had a chance to design such a loudspeaker, drive units were somewhat different, Morel MW265, Visaton G50FFL and Focal Be tweeter. MW265, MW266 and CAW938 are basically the same as Dynaudio 24W75 if you fancy such technology and they will all work very well sealed, given you provide them with enough of the enclosure volume they deserve.

In regard to Morel ET-338, these are just a bit too expensive for what they offer. You can get the same performance from CAT308 with reduced sensitivity which will still need to be padded down in a simple TMW configuration. The same holds true for EM1308.

MW266, CAM558 and CAT308 would get you to your goal.

You might get lower and louder bass notes with MW-1075, which is another sealed cabinet specialist, if you can spare a larger cabinet.

Something like was done with Dynaco A25 clone kit

My first thot when i saw the title was the sealed version of the A26 kit developed for the Devore-style thread.

A sealed 2-way with a big woofer and a tweeter crossed low, with better drivers you can acyually buy.

Bob Berner has been doing some of these boxes, the small one and the large one so far are the most built. The Madisound kit (the box) has too many downsides for my taste.
