Marantz CD 63 KIS - possible dead transfermer

A few months ago I short-circuited the transformer on the output side whilst installing a master-clock upgrade.

Having patched up the coating on a few of the fried wires, the player worked with no problem for a few months, but no more.

The voltage on the input side of the transformer is 240V, but on the output stage, 0V. The transformer does not hum, or get warm.

I would guess there is a problem in the windings, that steadily got worse, until the thing died suddenly - comments please!

I guess it's fried. The transformer is made by Nuvotem, and the part number is 90897-P1S6. Has anyone ever replaced a transformer in the CD63KIS, and it so, where were they able to get one from?

Hi,

I got a Japanese market CD17 that had been plugged into the local mains (240V). The perpetrator had thrown out the transformer.

I contacted the service tech for Marantz here in Australia, who was kind enough to photocopy the part of the schematic that showed the secondaries. I then contacted a local transformer winder (Harbuch Electronics in Sydney), who wound up a replacement toroidal for AU$50. A couple of fuses later in the machine, & it hasn't skipped a beat. Too easy! You could, of course, just order a replacement part from Marantz, but I imagine it'd be more than AU$50.

The other possibility is it's just the thermal fuse in the transformer has blown, in which case you may be able to carefully cut away the outer covering to access & replace.

Probably a thermal fuse in the transformer opened. This is non-fixable.

Does the 63KI have a toroidal? I've the mains transformer (E-I type) from a regular CD63 you can have for the cost of the postage if you wish (email me, link below).


Otherwise, it wouldn't be so difficult to provide alternative supplies. The rails in a 63 are +/- 12 V (analogue stage); 5V (digital); -18v (display - also requires + 3VAC for heater) - so transformers to provide 12-0-12 and 6V AC would get you most of the way there.

You should be able to get transformer from Marantz Spare Parts and Service.

I have successfully bridged-out a number of open thermal fuses, but it is delicate and you have to be careful not to cut very thin primary windings.

Difference between 63 and 63SE (MKII) transformers is in laminates. 63SE and MKII have more laminates then 63. I'm not sure about KI model (is it toroidal? The OFC wire might be used as well, but I doubt!). However, you could even install your own transformer(s). I have used separate (additional) transformers for audio section in both 63 and 63SE. The 63 benefited much more from the same transformer upgrade.

The manufacturer referred me to Marantz for a replacement, then the parts suppliers told me the transformer is obsolete and spares are no longer available. Maybe a go at getting under the the wrapping and find that thermal fuse and replace it, though that sounds like a very fiddly job.

I am loathed to bin the player or sell it on ebay for a few quid....

But what to do with the RockClock clock master upgrade unit? I would guess maybe buy a 2nd hand working Marantz 63KIS and install the unit in that, then use the old player for spares.

Unless there are any other players that will benfil from the RockClock.

BTW the Marantz sounded fantastic after the upgrade - my CD collection sounded like a whole new collection.
 
Plan of attack - I'll first try getting to the transformer internal fuse. If that goes pear-shaped, then I'll try and get separate transformers for the individual input voltages.

But to do this, does anyone know the input voltages to use on the various circuit board power inputs, and the VA value reqired, or have any other suggestions?

I guess that if I can get hold of a CD 63 transformer for at least some of the inputs, then something better for the analogue power input, that may work well (along the lines of some posts here).

Any other general recommendations are welcome.

This is the layout of the board down-voltage wire attachments- does your transformer match this layout?

If the input voltages are known against each 'pin', that would also be very useful information. I am struggling to interpret the maintanance manual for the player.

I may well take up the offer of the transformer. Could you confirm that it has the correct voltage outputs - if all is OK then can we arrange for the postage (I'm in Woking).

Input voltages for the circuit board and wire-out for the now well broken toroidal transformer - could anyone confirm this?

U305 - green - hits C384 - 13.9V (no second 13.9V AC rail?)
U306 - pink - hits D801, D803 - 17.6V
U307 - purple - hits D802, D804 - 17.6V
U308 - blue - hits JB805 - 9.6V
U309 - yellow * 2 - hits C812, C811, C852 and other - 3.6V
U310 - red - hits JB807 - 9.6V
U311 - orange (again!) - hits R852 - 3.6V
U312 - brown - hits R853 - 3.6V

(no U ref) - grey and orange - hits a lot of things. The orange attaches on C801 (no capacitor present), the grey hits a track leading to C801 - 17.6V
