I recently picked up a Marantz CD63 MKII which has been very impressive so decided to start some basic modifications inspired by the great modding thread on here. Yesterday I removed the PCB and disabled the Head Phone Circuit (removed C 901/902 and U 139/140) and the Muting Circuit (removed QN 24/25/91/92 and RN 27/28), fitted an IEC and lined the chassis with sound deadening. Now it is all reassembled the optical drive has developed a fault which service mode identifies as Error 12 / SLED Error. I have uploaded a video to show how the drive is operating, all it does is spins the cog whilst the pickup stays at the back of the transport.
Just about to pull the board and check for mistakes, any help greatly appreciated.

put a small drop of lubrication oil on the lens assy shaft, and move the assy towards the spindle motor manually until it reach the switch, this may help.

Thanks for the suggestion, gave it a try but no change. Had the board out and back in now, no obvious faults

I have the same issue on my CD5000, it's a VAM short loader so more difficult to see what's actually happening inside.
Hopefully someone can solve the problem.

BTW, I don't believe it's a mechanical issue, I fitted a spare mech on to the VAM pcb and the same thing happened.

Hi Pete,
No progress on mine other than I've now damaged the ribbon cable on the pick up. I'm toying with the idea of buying a replacement pick up but there's a working second hand CD63 MKII KI on eBay not far from me so if it goes cheap I'll buy it for diagnostics / spares. Good luck!

There doesn't look to be much in the circuit, a motor driver chip and some resistors, caps.
I'll check the voltages on the chip at the weekend and see if there's anything obviously wrong. If it's the chip that's blown then it's probably curtains for the board.

I replaced the motor servo chip and the main cap feeding it, checked all the resistors are ok and the voltages at the chip (as far as I can check) are all ok.
Made no difference 😕
Not sure where to go with this now, probably just write it off.

I've got a CD63 & 67 arriving tomorrow so with a few spare parts may be able to offer some insight

OK, fixed the SLED error, however it was caused by my own stupidity! If you look at my first post you'll see I removed U139 & 140, this should have been U271 & 272 (I was looking at documentation for a CD67 not 63!), replaced U139 & 140 and no more SLED error. Sorry Pete I doubt this will help you at all, have you made any progress?
Glad you found the error on yours, those links seem to be related to the servo driver chip where I was looking on mine.
Funnily enough I picked up another faulty CD5000 recently and it has the same error but the sled goes through the motions for a while before just starting clicking, my old one goes straight to the clicking. the new one is showing a focus error instead of the sled error. I'm beginning to wonder if this sled issue is a symptom of another error rather than being the issue itself.

Also a funny coincidence but the donor 63 I picked up has a focus error as well

I will endeavour to diagnose it this weekend (time permitting) and post any findings, good luck!
cd5000 sled issues
No solution yet.
But.... while listening to my second (working) CD5000 I pressed eject while it was playing and got the same issue with the sled just clicking. Luckily it cleared itself when i pressed some other buttons.

Hi Pete,
I'd completely forgotten about this thread, I stripped the CD63 to try and find the fault but nothing obvious. Cleaned all connections, reassembled and no errors??? I didn't investigate any further as it has worked without fault since then. By pure coincidence I've had all Marantz CDP's spinning this weekend (CD67SE with Tricord Clock 4B and AD826AN OPAMP's (HDAM's bypassed), CD63 with Mullard ECC83 output stage and stock CD63MKII) in a shoot out with an Oppo DV-980H. The CD67SE came closest but in the end I preferred the Oppo to any of the Marantz players. For me this is the end of my Marantz modding, I'm going to sell the lot and buy a new Oppo or maybe a Marantz UD7007?
Good luck with the repairs,
Darren.

I'm wondering if the inner switch on the sled is faulty/dirty/not engaging, I'll investigate at the weekend when I have some time.
